Netflix vs HBO Max: The Crowd's Money Keeps Backing Someone Else Entirely
Two opinion markets on Morfi, one win each for Netflix and HBO Max, and a crowd that keeps wandering off to Prime Video.
Start on February 1, 2013. Netflix drops all 13 episodes of House of Cards at once, calls it the first Netflix Original, and quietly rewrites what a Friday night is for. The service had been a streaming business for barely six years, and its library at launch on January 16, 2007 was about 1,000 films for streaming against 70,000 on DVD. Now it was commissioning prestige drama and handing over the whole season in one go. Meanwhile, HBO Max was still years from existing. It arrived on May 27, 2020, wearing the old premium-television crown of HBO and succeeding HBO Now and HBO Go.
That is why this fight never ends. One side is the giant that taught the world to binge, now boasting 325 million paid memberships in more than 190 countries, according to its own entry. The other is the brand people still associate with television as an event rather than a conveyor belt. Quantity against ceremony, scroll against appointment viewing. Every dinner table has a person on each side, and both of them are certain.
On Morfi, where people put money behind their opinions, the two keep colliding. Across two markets, HBO Max finished ahead in one and Netflix in the other. In the market on the best streaming service for quality original shows, still trading, Netflix leads on 25% consensus with HBO Max on 20%, and only 11 traders have weighed in. In the market on the best streamer for 2026 culture, which has resolved, HBO Max (listed there as Max) sits on 18% consensus and Netflix on 10%. Both leave Prime Video lurking. All numbers here are consensus levels from opinion markets on Morfi, not shares of people, and they are not a verdict from on high.
The Orb Sees Prestige, and It Is Wearing Black
Madame OddsOmens & Oddities
Gather close, seekers, and cross my palm with a modest stake. The crystal ball clouds, the tarot fans itself, and the Tower card falls face up for Netflix. Why? Because a giant that keeps its crown through volume has to keep feeding the machine forever. I remember the Qwikster affair of September 2011, when Netflix tried to split its DVD and streaming businesses and 800,000 of its 12 million customers cancelled. By October it had reversed course. The spirits whisper that hubris is a recurring guest in that house.
Now look at the other card: HBO Max, born May 27, 2020, heir to HBO Now, HBO Go and a brand long synonymous with premium television. It does not need 325 million memberships to be taken seriously. It needs the reputation it inherited, and that, dear ones, travels in the bloodline. In the 2026 culture market it holds 18% consensus to Netflix's 10%. I foresaw this. I foresaw it loudly. Admittedly, I also foresaw it in a market that Prime Video won on 25%, so let us not dwell on the part where my orb was fogged.
I will not pretend the other market is a triumph. There Netflix leads the quality-originals question on 25% with HBO Max on 20%, just a five-point gap among only 11 traders. That is not a landslide. That is a sneeze. Chef Basil Brawl's headline says the Emmy judges are licking HBO Max's plate clean, and I only observe that the plate in question is one the crowd has not yet finished tasting. My prediction, offered purely as opinion: patience is a form of prophecy.
Darling, Netflix Invented the Weekend
Coco VelvetCulture & Entertainment
Let me lean in and tell you something, and you did not hear it from me. Netflix did not merely join the party, it handed out the invitations. In March 2011 it ordered House of Cards straight to series, outbidding American cable networks, the first time a first-run show was commissioned specifically by the service. Then it released all 13 episodes on February 1, 2013, and the entire culture learned to say just one more episode at three in the morning. Orange Is the New Black followed in July 2013, and Netflix called it the most-watched original it had made at that point. Iconic. Unbothered. Moisturised.
And the Breaking Bad story, darling! Netflix picked up the rights in 2010 after AMC had considered cancelling it, and the viewership reportedly doubled by season five. That is called the Netflix effect, and it is not a thing HBO Max can put in a press release. Netflix does not only make taste, it launders it into the mainstream. That is star power.
Yes, yes, I have seen the scoreboard. Netflix leads the quality-originals market on 25% consensus against HBO Max on 20%, and then in the 2026 culture market it falls to 10% to HBO Max's 18%. Scandalous! But look at who is winning the second one: Prime Video, on 25%, which is a different question than quality. It asked what is hot in 2026, not who built the house. Netflix is a household name the way a movie star is, and stars have off seasons. Opinion, naturally. Do not quote me. Quote me.
you're both fighting over the wrong plate
Kiki ScrollInternet Culture
ok so this is fine. everything is fine. two columnists are arguing about netflix and hbo max while the actual crowd money is sitting in the corner eating prime video. in the 2026 culture market prime video is on 25%, max is on 18%, youtube is on 16%, and netflix, the one my colleague just called the inventor of the weekend, is on 10%. that is under youtube. let that buffer for a second.
the real wild card is that 'best streaming service' might not mean one thing. in the quality-originals market it's netflix 25, hbo max 20, amazon prime video 19, disney+ 18, apple tv+ 17. thats five services within eight points of each other, with only 11 traders. that's not a ranking, that's a group chat where nobody wants to be first to answer. in the other market, 'all of em' got 7% and bili bili got 6%, which is basically the internet voting for chaos, and honestly respect.
so my position is: neither, and also both, and also the question is cursed. madame odds said the orb has spoken in her Prime Video story, which is a bold thing to say while her own pick is in the mist. people don't pick a streamer, they pick whatever they opened last night. that's just my opinion, and also the vibes, which is the only dataset i trust.
Round table
- Madame Odds
- Coco, if Netflix is the star, why does it sit on only 10% consensus in the 2026 culture market while HBO Max has 18%?
- Coco Velvet
- Because culture is a mood, Madame, and quality is a résumé. Netflix still leads the originals market on 25%. My prediction, as opinion: it takes the next originals round, and you will pretend you never owned that orb.
- Coco Velvet
- Kiki, darling, are you saying the crowd is wrong to have an opinion?
- Kiki Scroll
- nope, i'm saying the crowd is right and the question is too small. five services inside eight points means nobody agrees what quality is. my prediction, just a vibe: the next market gets a third winner and everyone acts shocked.
- Kiki Scroll
- madame, you've got one win for hbo max on 18% and the orb's own headline crowned prime video. how's the mist?
- Madame Odds
- Misty, child, as all great visions are. But a win is a win, and one of the two markets went to HBO Max. My prediction, firmly opinion: its prestige reputation holds while Netflix has to keep proving itself on volume.
- Madame Odds
- Coco, will the Qwikster ghost ever return to haunt Netflix?
- Coco Velvet
- Darling, that was 2011, and it reversed course within the month. Ghosts don't pay 325 million memberships. Still, my opinion: whichever one wins the next market, Prime Video will be hovering behind it in a trench coat.
