Ladies and gentlemen, lovers and heartbreakers, turn down the lights. Two great houses have been circling each other under the same moon for decades, and tonight the crowd finally picked up the phone. Marvel or DC: who tells better superhero stories? It is the oldest slow dance in pop culture, and somebody had to leave the floor with a broken heart.

The history is a romance with two very different accents. According to Wikipedia's DC Comics entry, DC's Action Comics #1 is credited as the first comic to feature the superhero archetype, and Detective Comics #27 in March 1939 introduced Batman. Marvel arrived later: its own history notes that The Fantastic Four #1, from November 1961, gave readers squabbling heroes as a break from the more idealised ones that came before.

The screen era has had its own heartaches. The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Iron Man in 2008 and built to Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Then came the hangover. In July 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger said expansion had 'diluted focus and attention', and by May 2024 Disney promised only two, or at most three, Marvel films a year. DC, meanwhile, is starting over with a 2024 reboot led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

So what did the crowd do with two wounded lovers? On Morfi's opinion markets, where real people put real money behind their taste, Marvel leads at 60% consensus, with DC trailing at 40%. Remember, that is the strength of the crowd's conviction, not a headcount. Still, 33 unique traders have put $33,125 behind their hearts, and the market is less than a day old.

Here is my take, and it is pure opinion, written with a trembling hand. The crowd is forgiving Marvel the way you forgive someone who forgot your birthday but remembered your favorite song. Years of Infinity Saga memories do not vanish because of a few stumbles. DC may own the first kiss, with Superman and Batman, but Marvel owns the long, messy romance of a thousand shared Friday nights. Tonight, the bench depth wins.

But a love story is never over until the last record stops. DC has a fresh reboot and a clean slate, and Marvel has promised to trade quantity for quality. If either one lands a knockout in the next year, this gap could close. Think the crowd got it wrong? Take your side on the Marvel or DC market on Morfi and make the final chorus yours.
