Contestants, aprons on. Tonight's challenge reads like a set menu: Edge, 3G or 4G LTE, which signal is the wise choice for your wallet, your manners and your daily serving of news? Then, before the first pan had even warmed up, 5G strolled in from the walk-in freezer, a guest nobody put on the title card, and the crowd started cheering. This kitchen has seen sabotage before. It has never seen a dish enter the competition by just sitting down at the judges' table.
First, what's actually on the stove. Carriers around the world are retiring their older networks to free up spectrum for 4G and 5G, so your "choice" depends more and more on what your network still serves. EDGE, a slow-roast from the GSM family, reached operators in 2003, according to Wikipedia. A standards table puts its speed at a few hundred kilobits per second, while 4G is listed somewhere between a hundred megabits and a full gigabit. That's a candle next to a blast furnace.
3G, meanwhile, is getting cleared off the menu entirely. Canadian carrier Public Mobile has set March 2027 as the end date for its 3G network nationwide, to make room for 4G LTE and 5G. In Australia it already happened: after Vodafone, Telstra and Optus switched off 3G, calling over LTE or NR became the only way to place a cellular voice call. There's one leftover in the back of the pantry, though. According to Wikipedia, many LTE phones can still fall back to 2G for calls, which matters most in rural areas, and some operators keep 2G running after 3G is gone.

Now the judges' scorecards, from the opinion markets on Morfi, where people put money behind their palate. The gatecrasher 5G leads with 29% consensus across 5 holders. 4G LTE, the dish the brief actually rates as the workhorse of today's kitchen, sits second on 25% with 5 holders. Also on the pass: 2 other sides. All told, 10 traders have staked $8,028, and the market has been open less than a day. This soufflé has barely gone into the oven.
My verdict, and this is opinion, served hot: the crowd has ordered the dessert before tasting the main. The question asked about rationality, money and manners, and on those terms 4G LTE is the honest bistro plate. It's everywhere, it carries your calls now that 3G is being scraped into the bin, and it doesn't make you buy a new phone just to sit at the table. Backing 5G here is like answering "which knife is best?" with "a laser." Gorgeous. Not on the list. And spare a thought for EDGE, the stale crust of the signal world. Mock it all you like, but when you're stuck in the countryside and the fancy networks never got built, a fallback crumb is still dinner.
What to watch: whether LTE's bistro crowd fights back once the opening-night hype cools, and whether anyone dares put real money behind EDGE as the budget-and-etiquette dark horse. Next year's shutdown dates will only shrink the pantry further. Think the crowd has seasoned this one wrong? Pull up a stool, join the market on Morfi and put your money where your palate is. Service!
