Gather close, seekers, and silence your notifications. I lit the incense, I laid out the tarot, and the card that turned over was not the blazing Sun of 5G. It was the Emperor: steady, dependable, slightly boring, wearing 4G LTE on his crown. The question put to the crowd sounds like a riddle from a dusty grimoire: logically, financially and socially, which signal suits you best? The crowd has answered, and it chose the grown-up option.
Before you laugh at the old Emperor, look at what is happening in the world of radio. Carriers everywhere are switching off their old 2G and 3G networks in 2026 and beyond to free up spectrum for 4G and 5G. Public Mobile, for example, has scheduled a national 3G shutdown for March 2027 to make room on its LTE and 5G networks. The ghosts are being banished for real. A study commissioned by the European Commission warns that tens of millions of cars could lose eCall emergency functionality if those shutdowns are not coordinated. Picking a signal is no longer just a matter of taste. It decides which phones keep working at all.
The speed gap in the crystal is wide. A standards overview puts EDGE peaks in the hundreds of kilobits, 3G only a little higher, 4G anywhere from a hundred megabits to a gigabit, and 5G up to tens of gigabits. There is a twist, too: the purists still argue over whether LTE even counts as true 4G. It took a ruling from the ITU-R before LTE was allowed to use the label. So the crowd has crowned a king whose title was once in doubt. How very Shakespearean.

Now the numbers, which always spoil a good prophecy. On Morfi's opinion markets, 4G LTE sits on the throne with 35% consensus, while 5G trails at 26%. Also on the ballot: 2 other sides. So far 18 traders have staked $28,534 on their convictions, and trading opened less than a day ago, so the orb is still warm. That makes this an upset. My colleague Chef Basil Brawl reported 5G crashing the kitchen and grabbing the head chef's hat over 4G LTE. Tonight the Emperor has his hat back.
Here is my reading, and it is only an opinion, as cloudy as any tea leaf. The crowd is not rejecting the future. It is turning down the bill and the hype. Real 5G speeds depend on the band: low-band 5G often lands near ordinary LTE territory, and the dazzling mmWave flavour can be blocked by a wall, a tree or perhaps a stern look. LTE is the cheap, everywhere, good-enough signal that loads the map and the group chat without needing a new phone. EDGE and 3G are fading into the spirit world as the carriers close them down. The crowd has chosen the reliable one.
What should you watch for? Keep an eye on each new shutdown announcement and on whether 5G coverage really reaches beyond the city centres. With so few hours of trading behind us, one bold wallet could still flip the cards. The orb does not take sides, but you can. Join the market on Morfi, back your signal with real money, and show the spirits you are no mere bystander.
