Silence in the kitchen, please. Tonight's cook-off pairs two ingredients no sane chef would plate together: the capybara, the internet's favourite chilled-out rodent, and the crocodile, a set of jaws that has been around since before anyone invented garnish. A fresh market on Morfi asks a simple question: do capybaras make friends with crocodiles? The crowd has already picked up its forks.
Before we taste, let's read the recipe card, because it is grim. Britannica lists capybaras among the animals the Orinoco crocodile mainly feeds on, next to large birds and fish. Wikipedia's entry on the black caiman says capybara herds are among that reptile's most common prey where the two live side by side, and even the snail-loving yacare caiman is known to eat them. According to Britannica's student encyclopedia, capybaras often dive into the water to escape jaguars and anacondas, and it describes crocodilians as mostly solitary and territorial animals. None of the sources records a single friendship. On paper, this isn't a playdate. It's a dinner reservation.
And yet, pause for drama, the crowd isn't buying the cookbook. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people put real money behind their gut feelings, "be friends" leads at 34% consensus with 25 holders. "Not a friend" trails at 33% with 27 holders, and 1 other side are also on the ballot. In total, 33 traders have put $113,596 on the table, and the market opened less than a day ago. That is a lot of conviction in a friendship the field guides never mention.
- be friends34%
- not a friend33%
- can be both a friend and a prey33%
Here's my tasting note, and it's pure opinion: the crowd is voting for the photo, not the food chain. Anyone who has scrolled past one of those viral pictures of a capybara sitting calmly beside a reptile knows the look, unbothered, like a sous-chef who has seen it all. But calm is not the same as friendship. Sometimes the croc just isn't hungry yet. The "be friends" side has a wonderfully romantic flavour. The "not a friend" side has the sharper, saltier taste of reality. My scorecard says the dish is beautiful, and I'd still send the capybara home before dessert.
The market is still warm out of the oven, so watch whether "not a friend" catches up as more traders read the menu, or whether the crowd sticks with the buddy story all the way to the pass. Think the capybara is a friend, or just a snack biding its time? Join the market on Morfi and put your opinion where your appetite is.
