The verdict is in, and the internet's favourite cross-species friendship has failed peer review. Asked whether capybaras make friends with crocodiles, the crowd on Morfi's opinion markets has picked "not a friend", turning down the viral image of a zen rodent sitting next to a sleepy reptile. Think of it as a lovely hypothesis meeting its first proper control group.

The reference books were never really on the bromance side. According to Britannica, adult Orinoco crocodiles mostly eat large birds and fish but also take capybaras and other small mammals. Wikipedia notes that wild capybaras rarely live beyond about four years, largely because of predation by jaguars, ocelots, cougars, eagles, caimans and green anacondas. The case for friendship comes mostly from vibes: an ABC News feature quotes a cafe owner and a fan calling capybaras friendly and able to live harmoniously with other animals. Those are warm impressions, not field data.

Where the crowd stands
  • not a friend44%
  • be friends29%
  • can be both a friend and a prey28%

The numbers show the split. "Not a friend" leads with 44% consensus, "be friends" holds 29%, and the rest of the ballot (1 other side) picks up the remainder. In total 56 traders put $221,014 behind their opinions within the first day. That makes it a sharp turnaround from the cook-off market my colleague Chef Basil Brawl covered, where the crowd backed the buddy story even though it was on the menu. Same pair of animals, a new sample, and a very different result.

My take, from inside the lab coat: the crowd got this right, and that's no reason to feel gloomy. Fun fact: Britannica Kids says capybaras often dive into water to escape predators such as jaguars and anacondas. That is a bit like hiding from one danger by walking into another, where caimans might be waiting. When capybaras look calm next to crocs, I read it as low-energy risk management, not friendship. The calm temperament is real. The bromance mostly comes from a good camera angle.

The market opened less than a day ago, so the result can still move. Keep an eye on whether the "complicated relationship" crowd starts arguing that a truce counts as friendship. If you think the capybara deserves a retrial, join the market on Morfi and back your opinion.
