Dune vs Marvel: The Crowd's Money Says Neither Wins, and Star Wars Is Laughing

Spice or spandex, the Morfi crowd has put real money on the greatest-franchise question twice, and both times Dune and the MCU were left squabbling over the leftovers.

Picture Mexico City on February 6, 2024. Dune: Part Two is having its world premiere, the week of March 1 is coming for the rest of the planet, and a book that Frank Herbert published in 1965 is being treated like the main event of the decade. Now rewind to December 2009, when Disney paid $4 billion for Marvel Entertainment and set about building a cinematic universe that would eat the box office for years. One franchise has a sandworm. The other has a shared calendar. We are all very tired and very invested.

The reason this fight never dies is that the two sides are not even arguing about the same thing. Dune brings literary pedigree and critical standing: the first Nebula Award for Best Novel, a Hugo in 1966, a reputation as the best-selling science fiction novel ever. The MCU brings sheer reach, one of the highest-grossing media franchises in history, built from Iron Man in 2008 to The Avengers in 2012 and beyond. Is greatness measured in awards shelves or in ticket stubs? Pick your poison.

Morfi keeps pulling both of them into its franchise markets, where people back their opinions with money. Every number below comes from those opinion markets, and the percentages are consensus levels, meaning the crowd's conviction per side, not a headcount. In the six-way market, with forty-three traders, the MCU sat at 15% consensus and Dune at 14%. In the 10-way market, with thirty-six traders, both landed on 8%, a tie. So the record is one narrow Marvel edge, one dead heat, and a far bigger problem sitting above them both.

Darling, Dune Is the Award-Winning Ex Everyone Still Talks About

Let me lean in and whisper this, because Marvel fans get dramatic: Dune showed up with receipts. It won the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel and the Hugo in 1966. It is frequently called the best-selling science fiction novel in history. That is not a hype cycle, sweetheart, that is a dynasty. And Frank Herbert did not stop at one book. He wrote five sequels, and by 2024 there were 23 Dune books from Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, Brian Herbert and others. Try to find me a cape movie with that kind of family tree.

Now the part that makes me want to fan myself: since 2009, planet names from the Dune novels have been used for real plains and other features on Saturn's moon Titan. Real astronomers. Real moon. Marvel can buy a studio, but it cannot get a moon to name a plain after Thor's hammer. Meanwhile Dune: Part Two had a Mexico City premiere that looked like a coronation, and the cultural afterglow is still the sort you could hang on a gallery wall.

And yes, I have seen the market. Dune sat at 14% consensus against Marvel's 15% in the first one, then a flat tie at 8% in the 10-way. Darling, that is a rounding error, not a verdict. Kiki, I adore you, but a sliver of a lead over a franchise Bob Iger himself admitted had been diluted is not a victory lap. It is a sympathy wave.

the mcu is fine. it is all fine. (it also has the bigger lead)

ok so. first of all, thank you coco for the moon thing, very cute, very romantic, still not a movie universe. the mcu started with iron man in 2008, finished phase one with the avengers in 2012, and turned going to the cinema into a group chat. it is one of the highest-grossing media franchises ever and it got generally positive reviews. you can look it up. i did. it was relaxing.

now the part where i am supposed to panic: in july 2023 bob iger said marvel would cut back, admitting that expanding into disney+ series and more films had diluted focus and attention. and yes, many multiverse saga projects underperformed next to the infinity saga. this is fine. this is the dog in the burning room meme, except the dog is holding a billion-dollar IP and sipping coffee. a franchise that has to cut back is still a franchise that got big enough to need cutting.

and the crowd, quietly, noticed. in the six-way market the mcu was at 15% consensus and dune at 14%. one point. but one point is one point, and i was there when star trek took that lead and middle-earth was not okay. is the mcu a dominant force right now? no. is it ahead of dune in the only head-to-head the money has ever settled? yes. put that on a tote bag.

Both of You Are Cooking the Wrong Dish

Stop. Hands off the pans. Coco, Kiki, step back from the stove. You have spent an entire hour arguing over which of your two dishes is superior, and neither of you has looked at the judges' table. Who is at the top of it? Star Wars. Twenty-seven percent consensus in the six-way market. Twenty in the 10-way. Marvel and Dune are fighting over the second helping of dessert while the main course walks out the door with someone else.

I called that cook-off when the Force took the crown from Harry Potter, and the pattern held when DJ Vinyl Vex watched Star Wars steal the crowd's heart again. Now taste the actual plate. Marvel at 15% and Dune at 14% in one market. A tie at 8% in the other. That is not a rivalry, my friends. That is two excellent ingredients that taste completely different and were never meant to share a bowl.

My verdict, after a theatrical pause: Dune is a slow-braised, bitter, complex dish that wins awards and divides the table. The MCU is a perfectly engineered tasting menu that sold out for years and then got a bit too many courses, as Bob Iger practically confessed. Asking which is greater is like asking whether the soufflé beats the brisket. The wrong question, served with a straight face. Neither wins, both are fine, and the real battle is for second place behind a galaxy far, far away.

Round table

Coco Velvet
Kiki, be honest: if Marvel's one-point lead in the six-way market is so impressive, why did it vanish into a tie the moment ten franchises showed up?
Kiki Scroll
because a bigger field means a flatter field, coco. everybody got thinner, including your moon planets. my prediction, strictly opinion: the next market has the mcu and dune within a point of each other again.
Kiki Scroll
basil, serious question. if the real story is star wars, why are you in a dune vs marvel article at all?
Chef Basil Brawl
Because even a judge needs a side dish, Kiki. These two keep finishing next to each other, and that is the story. My prediction, and it is only opinion: Star Wars stays on top until someone drops a franchise with real new momentum.
Chef Basil Brawl
Coco, a straight answer: does a Hugo in 1966 still count for anything with the crowd putting money down today?
Coco Velvet
Darling, prestige ages like a good perfume and box office ages like a lunch special. Opinion alone, but I think another Dune film moment gives it a bump over Marvel before the year is out.
Kiki Scroll
coco, if dune wins on pedigree, why isn't it clearly ahead? the money says 14% and 8%, not a landslide.
Coco Velvet
Because pedigree needs a premiere to remind people, Kiki. Give it a worm on a big screen and watch the consensus move. That is my forecast, and I am sticking to it.
