Contestants, kettles at the ready. Tonight's cook-off has no knives and no blowtorches, just hot water and grudges. Black, green, oolong, herbal and spiced chai are all lined up at the pass, each one claiming to be the cup the world is reaching for right now. Less than a day in, the steam is already fogging up the judges' table.

First, the pantry check, and I'll be honest with you: nobody has handed me an official global sales ranking for these five. What exists is a scattering of trend notes, some of them a few years old, and they point in different directions. According to Wikipedia's overview of US tea culture, green, oolong and white teas have lately come back into favour, often sold as the healthy choice, and chai has gone from a rarity to the usual swap for people who'd otherwise order a latte. Bubble tea backs both front-runners at once: milk-based pearl drinks made with black or green tea are named as the two most popular bubble tea varieties. And green tea has a flashy sous-chef. Australian matcha intake reportedly more than doubled in a single year by 2026, with social media credited for matcha's global rise.

Now the tasting scores, which come from opinion markets on Morfi, where people put real money behind what they think. Black tea leads with 26% consensus and 9 holders. Green tea comes second on 20% with 5 holders. Also at the stove: 3 other sides. So far 15 traders have staked $70,277. Keep in mind these figures measure how strongly the crowd believes in each side, not a headcount of drinkers.

Where the crowd stands
  • Black tea26%
  • Green tea20%
  • Herbal tea19%
  • Chai tea19%
  • Oolong tea16%

Pause. Look at that against the pantry notes. All the trend writing goes on about green tea's comeback and matcha's viral glow-up, and yet the crowd went straight for the dark, malty classic. Tasting note: the market seems to treat trendiness and popularity as different dishes. Matcha may own the camera, but black tea still owns the breakfast table, the office mug and, as the bubble tea evidence suggests, half the boba counter too.

Five cups, one spotlight, and a judge who has had far too much caffeine.

My verdict, and it's purely the opinion of a judge who's had too much caffeine: the crowd has this about right, but it's playing it safe. Black tea is the roast chicken of the tea world. Dependable, loved by everyone, never sent back. But I can taste rebellion in the back of the kitchen. Masala chai is quietly stealing the latte crowd, and oolong is the dish connoisseurs whisper about. If I were holding a spoon and a wallet, I'd say the underdogs are underseasoned in this market. Green tea is close enough behind to make it a proper fight.

What to watch: whether the matcha hype pulls green tea up to the leader, and whether chai turns its café takeover into actual market backing before the timer runs out. It's opening day and nothing has set yet. Pick your cup and join the market on Morfi, because in this kitchen, an opinion with no money behind it is just lukewarm water.
