Contestants, aprons on. Tonight's mystery basket holds nothing less than the planet, and the challenge is simple to say and brutal to cook: which country or bloc does the world most link with global leadership and influence right now? Impact, diplomacy, soft power, all in one pan. The burners lit less than a day ago and the kitchen is already full of smoke.

First, the pantry. The outside world has been quietly changing the recipe. According to the Pew Research Center, whose July 2026 survey covered three dozen countries and territories, more people viewed China favourably than the United States in most of them, France 24 reports, and Pew's researchers called it the first time in about two decades of tracking that China came out ahead globally. NPR notes that only six countries still preferred the US, among them Japan, India, South Korea, the Philippines, Poland and Israel. In Latin America it's messier: a Latinobarometro poll across seventeen countries found China rated the more positive influence, yet the US still more popular overall, according to France 24. Two flavours on one fork.

Now the judges' table, which is the Morfi opinion market, where people put real money behind their palates. The United States leads at 34% consensus with 6 holders, and China follows at 32% with 3 holders. Also in the competition: 3 other sides. So far 10 traders have put $21,810 on the line. Note the odd seasoning: the polls say the world is warming to Beijing, but on influence the Morfi crowd is still serving Washington. Liking a dish and admitting it rules the menu are two separate tastes.

My verdict, and it is pure opinion from the judge's chair. The American plate is a classic steakhouse ribeye: loud, familiar, a little charred at the edges, and still the thing everyone orders when the bill matters. China is the slow braise that's been going in the back for twenty years, and the latest global polls say the aroma has reached the dining room. Taste it carefully, though, and the crowd isn't saying America is loved. It's saying America is unavoidable, and in a kitchen that counts as influence, burnt bits included. The EU, I'll say it, keeps bringing a gorgeous mise en place and never quite firing the dish.

Pixel-art cooking showdown between a grill station and a braising pot with a globe on a rotisserie between them.
One grill, one braise, one globe on the spit, and the judges are hungry.

What to watch: whether the braise catches the ribeye once more traders taste the Pew numbers, and whether any of the other sides can sneak a dark-horse dessert onto the pass. The market is barely a day old, so the plating is far from final. Grab a spoon and join the market on Morfi. Service is open, and the judges are waiting.
