Draw the curtains, dim the candles, and lay your palms upon the table, darlings. The orb has clouded, swirled, and at last coughed up a verdict: the crowd names the United States as the country or bloc the world most links with global leadership and influence. The Tower card has been turned over, the Emperor sits upright, and the Stars and Stripes are draped across my velvet. But the smoke keeps drifting east, and I've learned never to ignore the smoke.
The spirits of the outside world tell a darker story than my tablecloth does. According to a Pew Research Center survey released in July 2026, France 24 reports that more people hold favourable views of China than of the United States in most of the countries and territories surveyed, Canada and Mexico among them. Pew says it's the first time in roughly two decades of tracking global opinion that China has come out ahead. Its researchers point partly to fading memories of the Covid-19 pandemic and to a feeling that the US isn't contributing to peace and stability, especially since the war involving Iran broke out. A separate survey of more than forty-six thousand people in eighty-five countries, the Kyiv Independent reports, put the United States just behind Russia near the very bottom of the global perception table.

And yet the Morfi opinion markets hold firm for the old empire. The United States leads at 42% consensus, with China close behind at 23%. The rest of the ballot, 3 other sides, sits in the shadows at the edge of the candlelight. Trading opened less than a day ago, and 17 traders have already put $62,776 behind their visions. Just know what you're reading: this measures the crowd's conviction, not a headcount of believers. The crowd is betting on raw presence and impact, while the pollsters were measuring warmth. Those are two very different spells.
Now my own reading, and it is only opinion, dears, served with incense. Influence and affection are not the same, and the crowd knows it. You can be the loudest guest at the séance without being the one anyone wants to sit next to. America still owns the room. Its aircraft carriers, its dollar and its endless broadcasts haunt every corner of the globe, so of course people name it first. But soft power is about being admired, not just noticed, and the outside polls say the admiration is draining away like wax from a guttering candle. My colleague Chef Basil Brawl saw it coming when he served up the United States grabbing the early influence crown while China simmered at the pass. I fear the simmer is turning into a boil.
Here is what I'll be watching in the next hand: whether China's backing creeps toward the leader as more traders arrive, whether any of the long shots stirs from the dark, and whether more surveys like Pew's tilt the crowd's conviction. A lead this young can still be shuffled. Bring your own omens, cross my palm with stablecoins, and join the market on Morfi before the orb changes its mind.
