People are searching for Coinbase right now, and the searches coincide with a week of Coinbase news: a customer data incident and a profitable quarter. Then a Morfi opinion market asked which exchange people would actually use for everyday trading, and the attention never turned into votes. Binance finished first at 30% consensus. Coinbase came second at 19%. Drawing searches, it turns out, is not the same as drawing votes.

There was never really a race. When the chart starts (Oct 29), Binance stood at 24% and Coinbase at 20%, and Binance led at every point after that, moving between 21% and 31%. Also on the ballot were 3 other sides. In all, 54 traders put $66,184 behind their opinions in under a day of trading. That is quick for a final verdict, though at least nobody can blame indecision.

The news explains the clicks but not the votes. According to Decrypt, Coinbase said an incident at analytics firm Amplitude hit a "small subset" of customers and did not say how many, while stressing that customer funds were not impacted. A day later, Decrypt reported third-quarter net income of $719 million, driven largely by gains on its crypto holdings, while revenue stayed flat at $1.22 billion. Neither story says anything about fees, liquidity or the interface, which are what this market asked about. A company can have a fine quarter and still not be anyone's first choice.
My view, and it is only a view: whatever the news cycle did for Coinbase's profile, Binance led at every point on the chart. Not everyone went along. One Binance seller, eth maxi, described the research behind that trade as "logged off twitter to think about it for 3 seconds then bought." A Coinbase seller, Dave π, offered the broader point that "the popular take is popular cause its easy not cause its correct." Sound advice, though the crowd mostly didn't take it.
For Coinbase to close the gap, it would need news about the trading experience itself, such as fees, listings or reliability, not more earnings and incident notices. This market has reached its verdict, but other questions are still trading on Morfi for anyone who wants to put money behind their view.
