Stop stirring the soup, dears, because the crowd has spoken. Asked which search engine actually understands you in 2026, the people of Morfi have put Google in first place and Perplexity in second. That is a fine result for a first day, though I did notice the market description admits that before the chatty robots arrived 'the answer was obvious'. Now it isn't, and everybody is shouting about it anyway.

Let me set the table first. According to Wikipedia's Google Search entry, Google now often opens results with an AI overview and has a dedicated AI Mode. It also holds roughly a 90% share of the global search market as of 2026. The same page says a United States federal court ruled in August 2024 that Google held an illegal monopoly in search, partly because it paid phone-makers and browser developers to be the default. So when somebody says 'I always start with Google', I now wonder whether they chose it or it was simply the biscuit tin already on the table.

The challengers are a mixed pantry. Perplexity launched its answer engine on December 7, 2022. It has a free version and a paid Pro tier, and in February 2026 it moved to a subscription-first model and dropped its AI-integrated advertising. It also faces copyright lawsuits from several publishers, and it denies Cloudflare's accusation of stealth crawlers. ChatGPT Search arrived in late 2024 so that ChatGPT could look things up on the web. Kagi, I'm told, is the paid, ad-free one, like a bakery that charges you at the door and then doesn't pester you with leaflets.

Now the numbers. Google leads at 35% consensus, with Perplexity behind at 23%. Remember, that is the crowd's conviction in each side, not the share of people who picked it. So far 31 traders have put $46,142 behind their opinions in this opinion market on Morfi. Also on the ballot: 2 other sides.

Here is my opinion, and you may put it in your pipe. Google winning a question about who 'understands' you is a bit like the old family doctor winning a poll about who knows you best. Of course he does. He has your whole file, and he has had it since before you could spell 'algorithm'. Understanding and familiarity are not the same thing, my loves. I suspect many of you voted with your thumbs, because that is where the habit lives. Perplexity in silver tells me the young people are at least peeking over the fence at something new.

Remember too that this market is less than a day old. A first-day verdict is like tasting the stew after ten minutes: promising, but nobody should be handing out rosettes. Watch whether Perplexity closes the gap, and whether ChatGPT Search or Kagi fans turn up with their own conviction. If you know which one really understands you, go and join the market on Morfi and back it with your own money, and don't leave it to the rest of the table.
