Binance vs Coinbase: Crowd Backs the Rebel Twice, Then Both Get Mogged by MEXC

The Nasdaq darling and the volume giant with the guilty plea keep meeting on Morfi's opinion markets, and our three columnists cannot agree on what the money is actually saying.

On 14 April 2021, Coinbase rang its way onto the Nasdaq with a reference price of $250 a share and an estimated value of $47 billion, then closed its first day at $328.28. It was crypto's grown-up moment, complete with ties. And yet, per the record, Binance was still the biggest exchange around that same April, the way it had been since January 2018. One company had the listing. The other had the volume. That split has never healed.

That is why this rivalry still starts fights. Ask which one is 'best' and you are really asking what you value: sheer trading muscle, a clean bill from regulators, or a giant user base that trusts you with its coins. Binance has a 2019 hack, a backed-out FTX rescue and a $4.3 billion fine on its record. Coinbase has a Y Combinator origin story, a stock ticker and over 100 million users. Pick your scoreboard and you have picked your winner.

On Morfi, where people put real money behind their opinions, the two have met in 3 markets since October 2026. Binance finished ahead in 2, Coinbase in 1, with no draws. But the asterisk is huge: in the one Coinbase won, neither came close to the top, and a third exchange walked off with the crown. Below, our columnists argue over the receipts.

The Ledger Favours the Giant

Let us begin with the balance sheet, because someone has to. Binance was founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao and raised about $15 million through an initial coin offering to get the lights on. Within months, by January 2018, it was the largest exchange by market capitalisation at $1.3 billion, and it held that title as late as April 2021, Coinbase included in the rear-view mirror. Few startups go from fundraising to dominance that fast without at least one regulator taking an interest. This one, as we will see, collected several.

The crowd's money agrees with the ledger. In the market on the most influential exchange by community opinion, which I covered when Binance won crypto's influence vote, Binance closed at 30% consensus. Coinbase finished on 17%, tied with OKX and a point behind Kraken and Bybit, who tied on 18%. In the still-open market on the best exchange for trading today, Binance leads at 26% to Coinbase's 18%. That counts as a trend in my trade, and also in most trades that bill by the hour.

I will not pretend the record is spotless. On 7 May 2019 Binance disclosed hackers had taken 7,000 bitcoin, worth around $40 million at the time, and froze transactions for a week. In November 2022 it offered to buy FTX's non-US operations and withdrew the next day. On 21 November 2023 it pleaded guilty to breaking US anti-money laundering rules, paid $4.3 billion and saw Zhao step down as CEO. Hannah will call that disqualifying. I would note that the crowd priced all of it in and still put Binance first twice, which says something about either the crowd's forgiveness or its appetite for liquidity. Possibly both.

My position, then, is simply that influence and volume are what the markets keep rewarding, and Binance owns both. Coinbase's single win came in a market where it polled 7% consensus. Golf scores like that rarely get a parade.

Ser, One of These Has a Ticker and One Has a Plea Deal

Ok so Penny just did a whole paragraph of 'yes they got hacked, froze withdrawals, ghosted FTX and pleaded guilty, but have you seen the volume tho'. Ser. That is the most degen sentence ever written by someone who owns a fountain pen. I respect it. I also once aped into a dog coin because the chart looked happy, so I know what it looks like when number go up blinds you to the fine print.

Here is the Coinbase arc. June 2012, Brian Armstrong, an ex-Airbnb engineer, and Fred Ehrsam, an ex-Goldman trader, start it and get into Y Combinator. Nine years later it is trading on the Nasdaq, closing day one at $328.28. By 2024 it has over 100 million users and is the world's biggest bitcoin custodian. Biggest. Custodian. That is the 'where do the normies actually keep their bags' crown, and normies are the ones who stick around after a crash, unlike me, who mostly sticks around out of stubbornness.

And the crowd? When I wrote up the user preference market, where MEXC mogged the exchange wars, Coinbase finished on 7% consensus against Binance's 4%, ahead of it in the one market that asked what people actually prefer to use. Nobody is calling that a victory lap, MEXC ran away with 56% and Gate took 15%, but when it comes to user love, Coinbase beat the giant. Influence is a vibe. Preference is where you click 'deposit'.

Not financial advice, obviously, I can barely manage my own portfolio. But if the question is which one you would trust with your grandma's sats, it was never close, and the one market that asked about preference put Coinbase on top. Binance stans, ngmi on the custody front, respectfully.

Wrong Boss Fight, Everyone

Portrait of Max HypeMax HypeTech & Gaming

Binance or Coinbase? Wrong question. Wrong game. Wrong console. Look at the actual leaderboard. The single biggest number in this whole rivalry is not Binance's 30%. It is MEXC on 56% consensus in the user preference market. Fifty-six! Nobody here even brought MEXC to the party, and it wiped the lobby.

Now look who keeps spawning in the middle of every match. Kraken. 5% in preference, 18% in influence, 19% in the best-for-trading market, a single point off Coinbase in the first market and a point ahead of it in the other two. Is Kraken the secret main character? When I covered the trading market, the headline wrote itself: Binance leads early, OKX grabs second, Coinbase stuck in fourth. OKX on 20%! Bybit on 17%! The field is a pack, not a duel.

Here is the real patch notes. In the preference market Binance got 4% consensus and Coinbase 7%, a combined score that loses to Gate's 15% alone. The two so-called heavyweights are fighting over the mid-tier while the crowd grinds elsewhere. Penny wants the volume king. Hannah wants the Nasdaq knight. I want everybody to notice the minimap.

My pick? Neither, for now. The crowd keeps saying the exchange war is a battle royale, and the old two-player rivalry is legacy content. GG, but update your game.

Round table

Hodl Hannah
Penny, real question: does a $4.3 billion guilty plea not count as a red flag in your spreadsheets, or just as a line item?
Penny Sterling
It is a very large line item, Hannah. The crowd read it and still gave Binance 30% consensus on influence. I report the tape. I do not always admire it.
Penny Sterling
Max, you crowned MEXC off one market with 33 traders. Is that analysis or a launch-day impulse buy?
Max Hype
Both! But Binance's lead in the trading market rests on just 10 traders, and that thing is still open. Small lobbies everywhere. Glass houses, Penny.
Max Hype
Hannah, Coinbase is tied with OKX in influence and stuck in fourth for trading. Where is the comeback arc?
Hodl Hannah
The arc is that user preference is the only market that measured love, and Coinbase beat Binance there. Cope accepted, ser, but it is my cope.
Penny Sterling
My prediction, opinion only: Binance holds the top spot in the trading market when it resolves, and the margin narrows enough to make Hannah insufferable.
Hodl Hannah
My prediction, also just my opinion: the next time Morfi asks which exchange people trust, Coinbase finishes ahead of Binance again. My track record is terrible, so weight accordingly.
Max Hype
My call, pure opinion: within the next few markets, someone outside the big two takes another crown, Kraken or MEXC, and this rivalry gets renamed in the group chat.
