Chefs, step away from your stations. A new cook-off opened less than a day ago, and the question is simple: which Korean act has the strongest fan appeal and impact right now? The crowd has tasted every plate and given the top mark to... (dramatic pause, cue the cello) ...NewJeans. That's a group that hasn't been allowed to cook in public for months. I'm putting my spoon down. I need a minute.
Let's read the order tickets. According to its Wikipedia entry, NewJeans has been sidelined since a 2025 court injunction, requested by their label ADOR, that barred the members from working independently. The group then announced a hiatus, and the contract dispute is still unresolved. Meanwhile, at the next station, BTS came back in spring 2026 after a four-year break, and their album Arirang held the top of the Billboard 200 for two weeks running. As of June they were also the only act with eighty million followers or subscribers on each of YouTube, Instagram, Spotify and TikTok.
The rest of the line isn't short on records either. BLACKPINK's YouTube channel passed a hundred million subscribers in February 2026, which no other artist had done. And IU was named by NetEase Cloud Music as the most-streamed Korean artist in the platform's twelve-year history, with nearly four billion streams. Charts, subscribers, streams: everyone in this kitchen measures the soup with a different ladle.

Now for the scorecards. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people put real money behind their palate, NewJeans leads at 28% consensus with 4 holders. IU is right behind at 26% consensus with 7 holders. Also on the ballot: 2 other sides. So far 10 traders have staked $48,157 on this. Put that next to the facts and it's a strange dish. The acts with the biggest fresh numbers aren't on top. The crowd's conviction is going to the act with the fewest new releases and the most courtroom drama.
Here's my verdict, and it is opinion, served hot. I don't read this as a mistake. It's a protest dish. Backing NewJeans says fan devotion is something no injunction can put in the freezer. That's romantic. That's a soufflé held up by pure feeling. But a judge has to taste what's on the plate, and IU has the deepest, most finished flavour: years of steady delivery, no garnish needed. If I held the golden spatula today, IU would take it, and the record-smashing BTS and BLACKPINK camps should wonder why their mountains of numbers taste so plain to this crowd.
What to watch: this market is barely out of the oven, so the early sympathy vote could cool fast. Any news on the NewJeans contract dispute could swing it hard either way. If the BTS and BLACKPINK camps show up in force, the numbers could flip completely. Think you have a better palate than this crowd? Join the market on Morfi, back your favourite with real conviction, and take your seat at the judges' table. Service!
