Liverpool v Man City: The Crowd's Money Runs Blue, but Anfield Isn't Folding
Across two Morfi opinion markets, Manchester City lead Liverpool every time, and our two columnists disagree loudly about whether that is destiny or just a bad week for Red.
Start on the last day of 2013–14. Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers had spent a season sprinting at the title, Manchester City under Manuel Pellegrini had kept pace, and when the dust settled City were champions, two points clear. Two cities about 35 miles apart, with a long history of industrial and economic needling, suddenly had a football fight worthy of the feud. Nobody has stopped arguing since.
The reason it still divides people is the margins. City won the league on the final day with 98 points to Liverpool's 97. Liverpool answered with 99 points and a title finish 18 points clear of City. City won again on the last day, 93 points to 92. Then in 2025–26 neither club won the Premier League, because Arsenal took it for the first time in 22 years. The two sides that bullied everybody else suddenly had to share the doorstep.
It keeps coming back on Morfi, the opinion markets where real people back their view with money. The numbers below are Morfi consensus, meaning the crowd's conviction, not a headcount. In the Top UCL Club Choice 2026/27 market, 38 traders put Manchester City on 20% consensus and Liverpool on 9%. In the Who will win the Premier League 2026–27 market, 19 traders have Arsenal on 28%, City on 22% and Liverpool on 15%. Across the two markets, City finished ahead of Liverpool both times and Liverpool never did. Two columnists, two corners, and we're going to let them fight.
Get Up Off The Mat, Anfield Is Not Done

Listen up! The crowd has Liverpool on 9% in the Champions League market and 15% in the title race. Nine! Fifteen! That is a skipped leg day, not a verdict. I'm not here to coddle you. I'm here to remind you who owns the heavy lifting when it counts.
Look at the tape. In 2017–18 City hit a record 100 points, and Liverpool still beat them 5–1 on aggregate in the Champions League quarter-final. That's a knockout, not a points decision! In 2018–19 City needed the final day, 98 points to our 97, and still Liverpool walked off with a record-extending sixth European Cup. Then 2019–20: 99 points, 18 points clear of second-placed City. Eighteen! That's not a title, that's a public workout demonstration.
Yes, I see 2022–23. City took the continental treble and we finished fifth. I'm not hiding from it. Champions look at the bad rep and log it. And the crowd put City ahead of Real Madrid, as I wrote myself, so I respect the muscle. But a 20% consensus in a field of ten is hardly a wall, and Liverpool is level with a pack on 9%. Underdog money is cheap money. Dex, enjoy the pump while it lasts.

And here comes the champion down the right wing, folks! Coach Tank is shouting from the touchline, but look at the scoreboard. Two markets, two wins for Manchester City over Liverpool. In the Champions League market City sit on 20% consensus, top of ten sides, with Liverpool back on 9%. In the title race, City are on 22% against Liverpool's 15%. That is the crowd's money talking, and it's not whispering.
Now the history, because this is a replay worth watching. The 2013–14 title race ended with City two points ahead of Liverpool. In the 2015–16 League Cup final it finished 1–1, and City won the shoot-out 3–1. In 2018–19 they took the league on the final day, then the FA Cup and League Cup for a domestic treble. In 2021–22, 93 points to 92, final day again. These are not accidents, these are a team that keeps crossing the line while others are still lacing up.
Tank will bring up 2019–20, and fair play, 99 points is a monster season. But then comes 2022–23, the continental treble: Premier League, FA Cup and a first Champions League, beating Inter Milan in the final, while Liverpool finished fifth. And the title market opened with City chasing Arsenal, as I put it, but chasing from second is a very different place than fourth. Liverpool fans, I love you, but the crowd has you behind City, and the stopwatch agrees.
Round table
- Coach Tank
- Dex, straight question: if City are so dominant, why is Arsenal on 28% in the title market and City only on 22%?
- Dex Blitz
- Because even champions get a new challenger, Tank. Arsenal won in 2025–26 and the crowd is backing the fresh winner. But City are still second, and Liverpool are further back on 15%.
- Dex Blitz
- My turn. Your Champions League number is 9%, level with several other clubs. What exactly is the case for Liverpool there?
- Coach Tank
- The case is history and heart! Sixth European Cup, a 5–1 aggregate win over City, and a crowd that is guessing with one eye shut. Nine percent is a starting weight, not a ceiling.
- Coach Tank
- And what do you say about 2025–26, when neither of your heroes won the league?
- Dex Blitz
- That the table has a sense of humor. But a gap year isn't a collapse. In my opinion City will finish above Liverpool in the next league table, and the markets will keep leaning blue.
- Coach Tank
- My opinion: Liverpool close the gap and the crowd gets embarrassed. Both of these numbers climb for Red before the spring, and I will remind you every single week.
- Dex Blitz
- Noted, Coach. The prediction here is that both clubs stay in the hunt and the next edition of this rivalry has another close finish. These are opinion markets on Morfi, so we'll see who the crowd backs then.
