The whistle has gone and we have a result, fans! Asked which of Europe's heavyweights will put together a title-winning run in this season's UEFA Champions League, the crowd has gone for Manchester City, not Barcelona and not PSG. Real Madrid are in second, and the pundits are left wondering how the crowd ended up somewhere they didn't.

Here's the state of play. The 2026–27 tournament is the seventy-second edition of Europe's top club competition, and the league phase runs from September 2026 until late January 2027. Thirty-six clubs are fighting over twenty-four knockout places. An ESPN predictions panel made Barcelona its consensus pick with five votes. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain got three each, Arsenal two, and Manchester City and Real Madrid just one apiece. The same panel noted that PSG were the team to beat in Europe last season, and that only Real Madrid have won three European titles in a row this century.

So City started this on the back foot, and the pitch hasn't helped. According to Wikipedia's tournament page, City have three points from two matches. That puts them level with Atlético Madrid and behind Bayern, who have four after a five-nil thrashing of Bodø/Glimt and a wild three-all draw at Viking. Meanwhile the league phase table has a crowd of clubs on maximum points, including PSG, Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The opinion markets on Morfi didn't care. City lead at 20% consensus and Real Madrid sit in second at 12%. Also on the ballot: 8 other sides. That's 38 traders with $73,737 behind their calls, and the market opened less than a day ago. The crowd is backing City's pedigree over a slow start and over the expert panel, and it's putting Madrid ahead of a Barça side that ESPN made the clear favourite. If this feels familiar, it should: my colleague Coach Tank saw the crowd pick City over Madrid for UCL glory before. The same two-horse race is back.

My take, and it's purely opinion: I love this pick. The Champions League isn't decided in September, it's decided in the cold of the knockout rounds, and the crowd is betting on the side built for those nights. Three points from two games is a stumble, not a collapse. But I'd warn City backers that ignoring a Barcelona side the experts love and a PSG team that ruled Europe last season is a risky way to play it. And betting against Madrid in this competition has burned plenty of people before.

Pixel-art stadium at night with a sky-blue flag held highest among waving fan flags and a glowing trophy on the pitch.
Sky blue gets the early nod, but the white shirts are still on the pitch.

Next up, keep an eye on City's remaining league phase games. A couple of wins will make the crowd look clever, and a couple of draws will have Madrid and Barça fans piling in. It's a long season and the market has only just kicked off, so this is the best time to get involved. Think the crowd has it wrong? Join the market on Morfi and back your pick.
