Instagram vs WhatsApp
The crowd can't split them: across 2 money-backed markets, Instagram and WhatsApp each finished ahead 1 times.
Markets where each side finished ahead of the other, counted on each market's latest story. Percentages are consensus within that market, among all of its sides.

Meta's Two Kids Brawl: Instagram vs WhatsApp, and the Crowd's Cash Can't Pick a Winner
Two apps, one parent, one split decision: on Morfi's opinion markets WhatsApp edged Instagram by a single point in one vote, then Instagram won the next by a distance.
Rewind to February 19, 2014. Facebook agrees to buy a messaging app that has no ads, a famously tiny team and a launch date back in May 2009, and it pays US$19.3 billion for the privilege (the figure on the day was reported as US$19 billion, and nobody in the room was haggling over the 0.3). At the time it was the largest acquisition of a venture-capital-backed company in history. Two years earlier, on April 9, 2012, the same buyer had snapped up a photo-filter app for $1 billion in cash and stock. That was WhatsApp's future housemate. Instagram had launched on iOS in October 2010. WhatsApp was the older sibling who arrived later and cost nineteen times more.
So why does this still start fights at dinner? Because the question is rigged by design. Instagram counts registered users and has passed 1 billion of them (June 2018). WhatsApp counts monthly active users and hit one billion in February 2016, after 900 million by September 2015. One app is where you perform, the other is where you actually talk. Both belong to Meta Platforms, so every argument about which is bigger is really a family argument about whose turn it is to do the dishes.
The crowd on Morfi keeps betting on it, though always as a side plot. These are opinion markets where people back their view with money, and the numbers below are each side's consensus, meaning conviction, not a headcount. In the first market, asking for the most popular social app, WhatsApp reached 12% consensus and Instagram 11%, both far behind X (Twitter) at 48%, as Ada Bytewell reported. In the second, on the most widely used platform worldwide, Instagram led at 30% with WhatsApp on 23%. Across two markets, one win each. Our columnists have thoughts.
it's giving main character, and the main character won
Kiki ScrollInternet Culture
ok so hear me out. instagram is the app where the internet decided what the internet looks like. the grid, the story, the 'photo dump' that is clearly not a dump because it took forty minutes to curate. whatsapp is a very good group chat. instagram is the culture. one of these gets a documentary and one of these gets your aunt's good morning flowers.
and the money is mostly on my side, quietly. in the market on the most widely used platform worldwide, instagram sat at 30% consensus, the top of the board, with facebook on 24% and whatsapp on 23%. that is a seven point cushion over the messaging app, which in meme terms is the dog in the burning room saying 'this is fine' except the room is whatsapp's lead. Coco Velvet called it a snatched crown, and yes, she's dramatic, but she is not wrong.
fine, i'll be honest about the other market: whatsapp got 12% and instagram 11% in the popularity vote. one point. that's a rounding error, that's a typo, that's a tiny-thumb misclick. and notice that all of it was lost to X at 48%, which is a separate group therapy session. also, instagram cost a mere $1 billion in 2012 and still ended up as the app everyone argues about. best value in tech, bestie. no notes.
the quiet app that feeds the whole world

Ladies and gentlemen, step up to the pass. Kiki has served us a beautifully plated photograph. Gorgeous lighting. A little micro-herb on top. And I ask you: where is the flavor? Instagram is the dish you photograph and WhatsApp is the dish you actually eat, every single day, with your family, at the table, at breakfast, lunch and late-night panic about whether someone is bringing the rice.
Consider the history, because every great kitchen has a pedigree. Facebook paid US$19.3 billion for WhatsApp in 2014, nineteen times the price of its photo-sharing sibling. You do not pay that for decoration. You pay that for a pantry staple. One billion users by February 2016. Then, in January 2021, a controversial privacy policy let many users walk out of the dining room toward Signal and Telegram, and the world's chat app still stood. That is not a trend. That is a cast-iron skillet.
And the crowd's palate? In the popularity market, WhatsApp took 12% consensus to Instagram's 11%. A single point. But, pause, a win is a win, and it was the only head-to-head where the question was simply who people like most. The worldwide market went Instagram's way, 30% to 23%, and I will say this carefully: the judges there were tasting registered accounts, and a registered account is a dish that was ordered once and never finished. Verdict: WhatsApp, with a clean plate.
you're both the wrong song, baby

Oh, my darlings. Sit down, the needle's on the record. Instagram and WhatsApp, two lovers raised under one roof, bought by the same hand, three hundred sixty-five days of rivalry and neither one can leave. You think you're asking who wins. But the real love story here is the third wheel in the doorway: Meta, the parent who signed both checks. In May 2017 the European Commission fined Facebook €110 million over misleading information about the WhatsApp takeover. That's what happens when the family fights get into the paperwork.
And look at what the crowd actually sang. In the first market, X (Twitter) held 48% consensus, TikTok 17%, then WhatsApp 12%, Facebook 12% and Instagram 11%, a three-way slow dance at the bottom of the room. In the second, Madame Odds saw the orb shake in a Facebook and Instagram dead heat before Instagram pulled ahead at 30%, with Facebook at 24% and WhatsApp at 23%. That isn't a duel, that's a love triangle with a ghost named Facebook.
So I back neither, and I back both. Instagram is the stage and WhatsApp is the backstage door, and nobody puts a number on how much of life happens at the door. The crowd is asking who is bigger, when the real question is where people actually go to be themselves. Registered users and monthly active users are two different languages, and the market keeps trying to dance a tango to a waltz.
Round table

- basil, real question: if whatsapp is the pantry staple, why did the crowd give it only 12% in the popularity market? that's not a feast, that's a snack. my opinion: instagram holds its lead the next time this reruns.
- Chef Basil Brawl
- Kiki, a staple doesn't need applause, it needs to be in the cupboard. And you won the worldwide vote with 30% consensus while the market was only fifteen traders deep. My prediction, strictly opinion: WhatsApp takes the next popularity vote, and by more than one point.
- DJ Vinyl Vex
- Basil, you cite the one-point win and wave off the seven-point loss. Isn't that cherry-picking, darling? My prediction, purely opinion: the next market will list both apps next to Facebook again, and Meta will quietly collect the whole chorus.
- Chef Basil Brawl
- Vex, if you refuse to choose a side, which one do you pick when the check arrives? And I'll say it plainly: my gut says the crowd keeps splitting this one down the middle.
- DJ Vinyl Vex
- I pay for both, Basil, as every romantic does. Kiki, you're the extremely online one: does anyone outside this market actually pick between a stage and a door? My guess, opinion only: X (Twitter) keeps winning the vague questions and these two keep fighting for second place.
- Kiki Scroll
- honestly no, vex, nobody picks. we just open both apps in the same minute and call it a personality. prediction, and it's only a vibe: the next market with a clear 'most used' wording goes to instagram again, and whatsapp fans will say the poll was wrong.
