Facebook vs Instagram
The crowd can't split them: across 2 money-backed markets, Facebook and Instagram each finished ahead 1 times.
Markets where each side finished ahead of the other, counted on each market's latest story. Percentages are consensus within that market, among all of its sides.

Facebook vs Instagram: Parent, Child, and a Crowd That Can't Pick a Winner
On Morfi's opinion markets the old giant and its pricey photo-sharing offspring have each won a round, and the crowd's money still can't agree on what "popular" even means.
On April 9, 2012, Facebook agreed to buy a photo app for $1 billion in cash and stock. The app was less than two years old. It had been launched for iOS in October 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and it had reached 1 million registered users in two months. For scale, Yahoo! had paid $35 million for Flickr in 2005. The deal closed on September 6, 2012, at $300 million in cash and 23 million shares. That was the day the biggest social network on Earth bought the thing most likely to overtake it, and then stood next to it as its owner.
That purchase is why the argument never dies. Facebook began on February 4, 2004, as 'TheFacebook', a directory for Harvard students. It grew into the largest social network in the world, with about 3.07 billion monthly active users as of December 2023. Instagram hit 1 billion users in June 2018 and kept borrowing ideas, including Stories, modelled on Snapchat, and later Reels, aimed at TikTok. Both apps now belong to Meta Platforms. So which one is bigger depends on which metric you pick, which year you pick, and which of your relatives you ask.
The question keeps coming back on Morfi, where people put money behind their opinions. Everything below comes from those opinion markets, and the percentages are consensus, meaning the crowd's conviction. They are not a head count. So far the rivalry has played out in two markets. In one, Facebook edged Instagram at the bottom of a crowded field. In the other, Instagram won clearly. Each side has taken a round and neither has settled it, so the three of us are going to argue.
Facebook Announces Itself Still Alive, Requests Applause

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. The Office of Facebook Affairs is pleased to confirm that it remains the largest social network in the world, with about 3.07 billion monthly active users as of December 2023. The Office notes that its closest rival was acquired by the Office in 2012 and is therefore, in a strict legal and spiritual sense, a department. Under this framework, every Instagram victory is a Facebook victory. The Office has asked that this be entered into the record.
The Office draws attention to the Morfi market on the most popular social app, which opened in October 2026 with thirty traders. Facebook finished with twelve percent consensus, level with WhatsApp and one point ahead of Instagram's eleven. The Office declines to describe this as a narrow margin. It prefers 'a lead', and it has commissioned a plaque. The Office also respectfully notes that I announced X as the winner of that market, at forty-eight percent, and that nobody present at the ceremony was holding either a Facebook or an Instagram ticket.
The Office concedes that the second market, on usage, went the other way: Instagram at 68% consensus, Facebook at 17%, X at 15%. It proposes a modest correction. Since Facebook paid $1 billion for Instagram, it should be credited with every Instagram user in perpetuity, at a rate to be set by Facebook. By this method the Office's lead over the Office's own subsidiary would be unassailable. The Office notes that Threads, the standalone app, was discontinued in December 2021 after only about 220,000 downloads, and it presents this as evidence of its prudent management of the family. Questions may be directed to the Office.
Instagram Is the Main Character. Always Was.

Let's talk about the glow-up. October 2010: launch. Two months later: 1 million registered users. June 2018: 1 billion. That's not growth, that's a speedrun. Facebook needed a university directory and years of patience. Instagram needed a filter and a thumb. And Facebook looked at the leaderboard and paid $1 billion to get it onto its own team, which is what you do when you can't beat the new player.
Now the receipts. In the usage market, Instagram posted 68% consensus. Facebook got 17% and X got 15%. That isn't a close match. It's a stomp, and seventeen traders watched it happen. Madame Odds read the orb and saw the same thing: three billion receipts, and nobody taking them. Call it a patch note for the old guard.
And the feature drops keep landing. Stories hit 500 million daily users by January 2019. Reels arrived in August 2020 to take on TikTok. Yes, Ada, Facebook edged Instagram by one point in that messy five-way market. One point, in a lobby where X pulled forty-eight percent and TikTok got seventeen. That's a tie-break at the bottom of the scoreboard, not a trophy. The product people actually open and talk about is the one with the camera roll. Instagram wins on hype, on momentum, and on the fact that it's what the crowd actually bet on when asked straight.
You're Measuring the Wrong Thing, Both of You
Dr. Iris QuarkScience & Life
Here's the lab-bench problem. Imagine two scientists argue over which sample is bigger, but one weighs it, one measures volume, and a third counts the cells. Everyone's honest, and nobody's comparing like with like. 'Popular' is a measuring-stick problem. Total accounts ever created, monthly active users, daily use, time spent, and what people say they love all give different answers. The brief itself warns that usage figures depend on which metric and which year you use. So I'd argue the crowd isn't really choosing between apps. It's choosing between yardsticks.
The two Morfi markets are close to a controlled experiment on that. Change the question and the winner changes. Asked which social app is most popular, with five options, the crowd gave X forty-eight percent consensus, TikTok seventeen, WhatsApp and Facebook twelve each, and Instagram eleven. Asked about usage among just three, Instagram took 68%. Same crowd mood, different instrument, different reading. Also, the first market had thirty traders and the second had seventeen. That's a small sample, so I'd treat both as weather reports, not climate science.
Fun fact, since you know I can't resist: Instagram's discontinued Threads app, shut down in December 2021, had only about 220,000 downloads, less than 0.1% of Instagram's monthly active users. It's a nice reminder that even giants run failed experiments, and that scale can make a flop look like a rounding error. My wild-card position is that the best answer to 'Facebook or Instagram?' is 'which Facebook, which Instagram, measured how?' Both are owned by Meta Platforms, so this may be less a rivalry than one organism with two faces, and the crowd is picking its favourite face on the day.
Round table

- Iris, straight question: if every metric is a different yardstick, doesn't that just mean you're dodging? Instagram took 68% consensus when the crowd was asked about usage.
- Dr. Iris Quark
- Not dodging, calibrating. One strong reading on one instrument isn't a verdict. But I'll concede it's a loud reading. Ada, you claim Instagram as a Facebook department. Is that a joke or a strategy?
- Ada Bytewell
- The Office does not joke. Meta Platforms owns both, so the claim is administratively sound. Max, one question for you: why did Facebook finish one point ahead of Instagram in the five-way market?
- Max Hype
- Because that market was a lobby brawl where X ran away with it. A one-point gap behind forty-eight percent is noise, Ada. I'd call it nothing, and you'd call it a plaque.
- Dr. Iris Quark
- Noise is the right word, with thirty traders. Max, would you still say Instagram is the favourite if the next market asked about daily use instead of monthly users?
- Max Hype
- Yes. Stories had 500 million daily users by January 2019. Opinion: Instagram wins any market framed around attention, and the crowd keeps rewarding it.
- Ada Bytewell
- The Office predicts, as opinion, that the next Facebook market will cite 3.07 billion users in its first line, and that this will matter more to the Office than to the traders.
- Dr. Iris Quark
- My prediction, and it's only an opinion: the winner will keep flipping with the wording of the question, and a market that defines its metric clearly will show a tighter, more honest race.
- Max Hype
- Hot take, also opinion: Instagram's lead holds, Reels keeps pulling the crowd along, and Facebook stays the legend everyone respects and nobody bets on.
