Gather close, seekers, and do not touch the velvet. Three spirits came before the orb tonight: the old blue ghost called Facebook, the glossy one called Instagram, and the restless bird now calling itself X. They asked one question: who among them is used by the most mortals? Before a single day had passed, the crowd threw the cards and named its monarch. Instagram is crowned. Facebook, the land of birthday reminders, is left in the mist.
But a fortune teller reads the ledger as well as the leaves, and the ledger says something strange. According to Wikipedia, Facebook's monthly active users sat at a little over three billion as of March 2026. The same encyclopedia's list of the most popular social platforms puts Instagram at around three billion in one version and closer to two point eight billion in another, with X far behind on a little over half a billion. Britannica notes Instagram only passed two billion in 2022. As for the bird, Wikipedia's X article records that Elon Musk claimed six hundred million monthly users in 2024, and that the company does not publish statistics on active accounts. So every measure in the research points the same way: Facebook first, Instagram second, X in the distance.
And yet the crowd has spoken against the books. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people put real money behind what they believe, Instagram leads with 68% consensus and Facebook trails on 17%. Also on the ballot: 1 other side. That is the conviction of 17 unique traders, with $315,149 staked. The crowd is backing a belief here, not taking a headcount, and its belief is that the photo app has overtaken its own parent company.

The cards have been here before. My colleague Chef Basil Brawl watched this same fight in his social media cook-off, where the crowd also crowned Instagram while Facebook's enormous banquet went cold. Twice now the crowd has looked straight past the biggest number in the room. Some things are written in the stars, and some are written in the crowd's heart.
Now, my opinion, read from the smoke and offered as nothing more than prophecy. I think the crowd is voting with its thumbs, not its calculators. Instagram feels like where people live; Facebook feels like where people's aunts live. But feelings do not move the decimal point. If the orb were judged on audited figures alone, I would warn the Instagram faithful that a reckoning is coming, and that the old blue giant, unfashionable and unkillable, is still sitting on the bigger pile of souls.
What to watch: any fresh user figure from Meta that finally splits the two siblings, and whether X ever opens its own books. The market opened less than a day ago, so the cards are still warm. Come to Morfi, cross the crowd's palm with your own conviction, and join the market before the mist settles.
