Aprons on, contestants. The pass is open and five broadcasters are plating up for the title of Best Regional TV News Brand: BBC News, ITV News, Sky News, Channel 4 News and Al Jazeera English. The brief is coverage, clarity and credibility. In my kitchen that means the ingredients, the presentation and whether you trust the chef not to have dropped your dinner on the floor. The bell rang less than a day ago and the crowd is already elbowing its way to the tasting table.

First, a confession from the judge's chair: most of this menu is national cooking dressed up as the local special. The contestants with real regional kitchens are BBC News and ITV. According to the ITV News page on Wikipedia, ITV's regional programmes are made by ITV plc, except London, which is cooked by ITN. That same ITN also supplies Channel 4 News, and the Channel 4 entry notes the channel has historically offered little regional variation. Sky News is a single national pot, and the research turned up nothing on Al Jazeera English for this particular dish.

The trust numbers make things spicier still. In the 2026 survey from the Reuters Institute, summarised on the GB News Wikipedia page, ITV News and Channel 4 News tied on net trust in the low forties, BBC News sat in the mid-thirties and Sky News came in under thirty. The BBC wins easily on reach, though: nearly half of respondents watch it weekly, roughly double ITV. And for anyone who thinks Auntie bakes the perfect local loaf, the government's value of BBC News review cites an Ofcom tracker in which only around half of respondents said the BBC covers local news well. That is well behind its scores for UK and world news.

Now for the crowd's verdict. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people put real money behind their palate, BBC News leads at 46% consensus with 7 holders. Sky News is the runner-up at 26% with 12 holders. Also on the menu: 3 other sides. So far 16 traders have staked $17,123. Hold on a moment, because this is odd. The crowd has put the rotisserie chicken second, while ITV and Channel 4, the two dishes the Reuters survey trusted most, are still waiting under the heat lamp.

  • Al Jazeera English9%

Here is my verdict, and it is opinion, served hot. The crowd is rewarding familiarity rather than flavour. The BBC is a Sunday roast: everyone grew up on it, everyone has an opinion about the gravy, and it fills the plate. But this is a regional contest, and ITV is the contestant actually running local stations up and down the country. Backing a national channel in a regional cook-off is like crowning the soup in the dessert round. My spoon says ITV deserves a far bigger bite of this market, and Channel 4's trust scores show it is underrated, even if it never cooks local.

Pixel-art judging table with five TV-shaped cloches under a spotlight while a crowd waves forks.
Five cloches, one crown, and a crowd that has only tasted the roast so far.

What to watch: whether ITV backers wake up and push their regional strengths, whether Sky holds second place on name recognition alone, and whether Al Jazeera English turns into the surprise dish nobody ordered. The market opened less than a day ago, so the stock is barely simmering. Grab a spoon, join the market on Morfi, and tell this judge whose newsroom really cooks for your town.
