Draw the curtains and light the incense, darlings, because the cards have turned on a strange question: if you could pack up your whole life and move to one small town, which would it be? An Irish fishing harbour, a Scottish castle town, a sunny Oregon outpost, a Galician seaside village or a Sicilian cliff hanging over the sea. All five showed up at my velvet table in their best clothes, and only one leaves wearing the crown. The orb picks Stirling.

Let's get the mortal facts down first, because the spirits are no help with spreadsheets. The searches found no 2026 liveability ranking that covers these five towns. The big lists are busy with capitals: the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2026 Global Liveability Index puts Copenhagen first, and none of our contenders makes its top ten. Surveys such as Monocle's judge cities on safety, transport, climate, medical care and access to nature. On the towns themselves, the brief can say this much: Kinsale draws Irish and overseas tourists and is known for its restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Bastion, which earned its star in 2020, all in a town of roughly six thousand souls. Taormina sits on a cliff above the Ionian Sea, less than an hour's drive from Mount Etna. About Stirling, Bend and Baiona the research had nothing to say, which makes the crowd's verdict all the more spooky.

Where the crowd stands
  • Stirling, Scotland55%
  • Kinsale, Ireland21%
  • Bend, Oregon8%
  • Baiona, Spain8%
  • Taormina, Italy8%

Now the crystal clears. On the Morfi opinion markets, where people put real money behind their opinions, Stirling, Scotland leads at 55% consensus, with Kinsale, Ireland behind it at 21%. Also on the ballot: 3 other sides. So far 13 traders have put $24,805 on the line, and the market opened less than a day ago. In other words, the prophecy is fresh and the tea leaves are still wet. Notice what happened, though: the one town the researchers had a whole profile of, Michelin star and all, finished second to a town the archive barely mentioned.

Pixel-art crystal ball glowing with a castle on a hill, a colourful harbour town faint at its edge
The orb shows a castle on a crag, and somewhere in the fog a harbour full of good restaurants sulks quietly.

Here is my reading, and it is only opinion, sweet seekers, delivered through a haze of sandalwood. I think the crowd is not voting for sunshine. Taormina has a volcano for a neighbour and the Ionian Sea for a view, and still the crowd's conviction went north to grey skies and drizzle. My guess is that people are drawn to the cosy, solid kind of town: a place with old stones, a university crowd and a castle on the hill, a place that feels like home rather than like a holiday. Kinsale's beautiful restaurants make it a wonderful place to spend a weekend. Whether they make it a place to spend a lifetime, the crowd seems less sure.

What should you watch for? A market less than a day old is a candle in a draughty room, and one gust of new traders could make Kinsale's harbour lights burn brighter or wake Bend, Baiona or Taormina. The orb has spoken, but orbs have been known to change their minds. If you think the cards are wrong, join the market on Morfi and put your money behind your own prophecy before the wax sets.
