Gather close, darlings, and mind the candle. I stirred the soup of fate and the steam took a shape: a bald Italian man holding a plate of tortellini as if it were a holy relic. The crowd asked the orb who is the single best chef in the world right now, and the orb answered Massimo Bottura. I can hear Gordon Ramsay's voice already, rattling the glass and calling the whole séance an absolute disgrace.
The spirits did not always speak this clearly. Not long ago my colleague Chef Basil Brawl found Ramsay and Bottura dead level at the pass, with the kitchen in flames. Since then the cards have shifted, and the ghosts in the walk-in fridge are whispering about who stepped out of the circle altogether.
That ghost is René Redzepi, once the high priest of the Copenhagen moss-and-ants movement. His Noma was named the world's best restaurant five times, but in March 2026 he resigned after a New York Times report described alleged abuse of employees between 2009 and 2017, which he has apologised for, Euronews reports. This is no omen for joking about. It is a real fall, and it changes the meaning of right now. Meanwhile Bottura's Osteria Francescana in Modena holds three Michelin stars and came first on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list in 2016 and 2018, according to Wikipedia. He also serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Environment Programme and campaigns against food waste, France 24 notes. Ramsay is no slouch in the stars department either. His group has collected seventeen Michelin stars over the years, holds eight today, and his Chelsea flagship has kept three since 2001.
Now the crystal clears and the numbers float up. On Morfi's opinion markets Bottura leads with 35% consensus, Ramsay trails at 22%, and the rest of the ballot, 2 other sides, sits further back in the incense smoke. Those figures measure how strongly the crowd believes, not a headcount of who voted. So far it is 60 unique traders with $172,346 on the table, and trading opened less than a day ago. The prophecy is dramatic, but the bowl it was poured from is still small.

Here is my reading, darlings, and it is only opinion. The crowd has picked the right sorcerer. Ramsay is a magnificent technician and a television storm god, but Bottura turns grandmother's leftovers into poetry and then goes off to feed the hungry with them. That is creativity and influence in one pot. And a list of the world's best that is decided by voting, judged by a crowd that votes with money, has a lovely symmetry to it. Ottolenghi fans, do not despair. The cauliflower is patient, and so are the cards.
What should you watch? Whether Ramsay's loyal followers flood in and pull the cards back to the tie my colleague saw, and whether Noma's reopening under new leadership changes how the crowd judges the Copenhagen school. The candle is still burning and the verdict is young. Cross my palm with your opinion, join the market on Morfi, and help decide who keeps the crown.
