Ronaldo v Maradona: The Crowd's Money Picks CR7, but Diego Still Won't Go Quietly
Three Morfi markets, two wins for Cristiano Ronaldo, one for Diego Maradona, and a rivalry that is really a fight over what greatness means.
Start in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final, with Argentina against England. Diego Maradona scores twice in a 2–1 win. The first goal is the unpenalised handball the world still calls the Hand of God. The second comes after a 60-metre dribble past five England players, and FIFA.com voters later named it the Goal of the Century in 2002. Few players have crammed that much cheek and genius into a few minutes. Every Ronaldo-versus-Maradona argument has to answer that afternoon.
The argument won't die because the two men are measured in different currencies. Maradona peaked in the 1980s, and he did it with a team that was never the strongest on paper. Ronaldo has stretched his excellence across more than two decades and owns a shelf of scoring and appearance records. One camp counts the mountain peaks. The other counts the miles walked. Nobody has ever persuaded anybody to switch.
On Morfi, where real people put money behind an opinion, it keeps coming back. These numbers come from opinion markets on Morfi, and the percentages are consensus levels for each side, not headcounts. Across three markets, Ronaldo finished ahead in two and Maradona in one. The crowd isn't treating this as a straight duel. Both men keep turning up in bigger markets about the greatest of all time. Here are two columnists who disagree, loudly.
Ronaldo Never Skips Leg Day

LISTEN UP. Greatness is not one good month. It is showing up again and again, year after year. Ronaldo played his first official match for Sporting CP's first team on 14 August 2002, aged 17, in a Champions League qualifier against Inter Milan. Manchester United paid £12 million for him on 12 August 2003, an England record for a teenager. Then he kept going. Two decades of goals. That is not talent. That is DISCIPLINE.
And the crowd agrees with me, Dex! In the market on the most unrepeatable football legend, Ronaldo sat on 35% consensus, with Messi on 23%, Pelé on 22% and Maradona on 21%. More than six hundred traders put money in. I called it in Ronaldo Out-Lifts Messi and I stand by every rep. In the greatest-footballer market, Ronaldo had 14% against Maradona's 12%. It's a small gap, but a win is a win.
Now the tough love. Maradona fans, I know about the 1986 World Cup and the Napoli miracle. Lovely. But one summer is a sprint, and the question is who built the bigger engine. Yes, Maradona beat Ronaldo in the market where Pelé ran away with it, 23% to 10%. That was fourteen traders. Come back when you can fill a gym. Ronaldo takes the crown two markets to one. Stay hungry, Diego's people.
Diego Is Down, but Never Out

And here comes the comeback, folks! Coach Tank has the scoreboard, but I have the story. Maradona made his professional debut for Argentinos Juniors on 20 October 1976, ten days before his 16th birthday, the youngest player in the history of the Argentine Primera División. In 1982 he joined Barcelona for £5 million, the first world-record transfer fee. In 1984 he moved to Napoli for £6.9 million, another world record. The market kept pricing him like a force of nature.
Then the 1986 summer arrives. Maradona captains Argentina to the World Cup and takes the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. A year later, Napoli win their first ever Serie A title, for a club that had never won the league and a city that had never had a southern Italian champion. That isn't a record broken. That's a whole map redrawn. Even the Copa del Rey final in 1984, in front of King Juan Carlos and 100,000 spectators, is part of the legend. A brawl broke out and sixty people were injured, and there he was in the middle of it. Chaos followed him because he was never safe.
Now the scoreboard, which I won't dodge. Maradona is behind two to one across Morfi's three markets, and 21% in the unrepeatable market is a long way back from Ronaldo's 35%. But he topped Ronaldo 23% to 10% when the crowd looked at the whole GOAT field, and he is only two points behind in the greatest-footballer market. In my own report, The King Is Back, Pelé took the crown while both our men fought over the minor places. Football fans, remember how this works: the league table is not the highlight reel, and the highlight reel is where Diego lives.

- Coach, straight question: if longevity is your whole case, why does Ronaldo's lead in the greatest-footballer market come down to two points of consensus?
- Coach Tank
- Because two points is still ahead, Dex! A champion doesn't apologise for the margin. My opinion is that Ronaldo's lead grows as more traders pile in.
- Coach Tank
- My question back: Maradona's best case is one World Cup and one Napoli title. Does a highlight reel really beat two decades of work?
- Dex Blitz
- When the highlight is a league title for a city that never had one, yes. And when it's a Goal of the Century, absolutely. That is peak value, Coach.
- Dex Blitz
- Another one: the biggest market, with 661 traders, put Ronaldo first. Doesn't that tell you the crowd has made up its mind?
- Coach Tank
- It tells me the crowd likes a man who keeps showing up. I'd say this is a pattern, not a fluke.
- Coach Tank
- Prediction, and it's only my opinion: Ronaldo stays ahead of Maradona in most future Morfi markets, and Pelé and Messi keep stealing the headlines.
- Dex Blitz
- My prediction, also opinion: Maradona makes a late surge whenever the question is about drama, not records. Never count out the man with the Hand of God, folks!
