ChatGPT vs Claude: The Crowd's Money Leans Claude, but ChatGPT Keeps the Errand Crown

Four Morfi markets, one famous chatbot and one fast-rising challenger: Claude wins the vibes, ChatGPT wins the errands, and our columnists refuse to shake hands.

Rewind to November 30, 2022. ChatGPT goes public, and within two months it has 100 million monthly active users. Nobody has ever seen software spread like that. By February 2026 it was at 900 million weekly active users. For a long stretch, "AI chatbot" and "ChatGPT" meant the same thing, the way every tissue is a Kleenex and every vacuum is a Hoover.

Then came the challenger. Anthropic's Claude arrived as a chatbot in March 2023, at first only for users Anthropic approved. It has spent the time since turning "the other one" into a serious contender. It kept its fans for its tone, its coding and its caution. It picked up a feud with OpenAI along the way: in August 2025 Anthropic revoked OpenAI's API access to Claude, calling its staff's use of Claude Code "a direct violation of our terms of service". Whether you like your assistant chatty and fast or careful and thoughtful, you now have a side.

On Morfi, where people back opinions with money, the argument keeps returning. Across 4 markets so far, Claude has finished ahead in three and ChatGPT in one. The latest is still trading, with Claude leading. Remember that these figures come from opinion markets on Morfi, that they are consensus (conviction) levels and not headcounts, and that the markets are small, with between ten and thirty-one traders. Our columnists have read them anyway. They disagree about what they mean.

900 Million Weekly Players Can't Be Wrong

Let's go. Everybody wants to talk about vibes. I want to talk about the install base. Two months after launch, ChatGPT had 100 million monthly users. By February 2026 it was at 900 million weekly. That isn't a product. That's a platform, a console generation, the whole arcade. When a chatbot becomes the default word for chatbots, you don't ask whether it's popular. You ask who else is even in the lobby.

And the crowd's money agrees where it counts. In the Morfi market on the best AI agent for everyday task completion, the Ministry of Errands crowned ChatGPT, as Ada Bytewell reported. ChatGPT sits on 30% consensus. Gemini and Copilot are level on 18%. Claude is on 17%, tied with Perplexity Assistant. That's the leaderboard for getting stuff done, and ChatGPT is up front.

Why? Because OpenAI shipped the agent kit. Codex, its coding agent, arrived in May 2025. ChatGPT agent followed in July 2025, doing multi-step tasks by driving a virtual computer. That's not a chat window, that's a co-op partner who actually runs the quest.

Yes, I wrote the headline asking whether Claude takes the crown, and yes, the crowd did pick Claude as the AI assistant that feels better, 60% to 40%. Respect. But feels better is a skin. Gets it done is the build. Iris, enjoy your cozy theme. I'll be over here finishing the raid.

The Preference Experiment Keeps Giving the Same Result

Max, I love you, but let's treat this like a lab. A good experiment repeats. We ran several trials on Morfi, and the result keeps coming back the same way. In the head-to-head on which chatbot people prefer, Claude holds 55% consensus to ChatGPT's 45%. In the one on which AI assistant feels better, it is 60% to 40%. In the three-way fight over most helpful AI, Claude finishes on 44%, with ChatGPT and Gemini tied on 28%, and the verdict named Claude the winner. Three of four markets is a pattern, not a fluke. Still, small samples, so I'd call it a promising result, not a settled law.

Is there a mechanism? My hypothesis, which is opinion and not data, is that Claude earned a reputation for usefulness in the work people actually do. Claude 3.5 Sonnet, released on June 20, 2024, outperformed the larger Claude 3 Opus on Anthropic's own benchmarks. It also shipped with Artifacts, which let you preview code and documents in a separate window. Think of a lab bench where the sample sits beside the notebook instead of inside a chat scroll. Then Claude Code went viral over the 2025–2026 winter holidays, including among non-programmers doing vibe coding.

Fun fact: Claude 2, released in July 2023, was the first Anthropic model open to the general public. The chatbot that now wins preference polls spent its first months behind a guest list. And a company that holds a line gets noticed. In February 2026 the US Department of Defense designated Anthropic a "supply chain risk" after it refused to drop contractual prohibitions on mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. A federal judge blocked that designation in March 2026. You don't have to agree with every Anthropic choice to see why some traders say Claude feels more principled. That's my reading, and I'll defend it.

You're All Arguing Over Who Sits at the Head of the Table

Oh, my loves. Max says ChatGPT wins the errands, Iris says Claude wins the feelings, and neither of you has asked why one person needs only one helper. I don't use one spoon for the soup, the porridge and the jam. In my first parlour report on this squabble I noted that Claude held the early lead at 55% to 45%. The question was never the point.

Look at what the markets actually say. Put the chatbots in a three-way contest and Gemini ties ChatGPT on 28%, so the great ChatGPT-versus-Claude duel quietly has a third guest at the table. Make it a five-way errands contest and Claude is on 17%, level with Perplexity Assistant, while Gemini and Copilot share 18%. That isn't a two-horse race. That's a church supper.

So here is my sharp little conclusion, dear. The crowd is asking which one is best, when the useful question is which one is best for what. Claude for the thoughtful letter, ChatGPT for the errands, maybe Gemini for whatever it is Gemini is for. The numbers back both stories at once because they are measuring different jobs. Ten traders in one market, thirty-one in another. Don't bet the farm, and certainly don't bet the pantry, on any of it.

Round table

Max Hype
Iris, straight question: if Claude is so loved, why is it on only 17% when the job is actually doing the errands?
Dr. Iris Quark
Because that market measures a different trait, Max. Preference and agent performance are different assays. And I notice you skipped the three-way market, where Claude leads on 44%. That's a control you can't ignore.
Dr. Iris Quark
Grandma, you say it's the wrong question. Doesn't the crowd's repeated verdict suggest it's a pretty useful question after all?
Grandma Gigabyte
It tells you what people prefer today, dear, like asking who bakes the best pie on one Sunday. Useful, but I'd still want to taste the other pies. Max, your agent crown is real, but it's a small crowd with five names on the ballot.
Grandma Gigabyte
Max, would you really use only ChatGPT for the rest of your life?
Max Hype
Honestly? No. I'd be in the settings of every app on launch day. But if the game forces me to pick one, I'm picking the one with the agent features and the giant player count.
Max Hype
My prediction, and it's only opinion: ChatGPT stays on top of the agent and errand markets while the agent race stays crowded, and the next big update drops flip a preference market back its way.
Dr. Iris Quark
My prediction, also opinion: Claude keeps winning the feels-better questions, and the Claude Code crowd drags it up the agent leaderboards. Grandma's prediction?
Grandma Gigabyte
Opinion only, dear: people will keep the favourite for the letter and the other for the errand, the crowd will keep arguing, and the kettle will stay on.
