Hands off your pans, chefs. Step back from the stations. The verdict is in, and I'll just let it sit there for a moment... NICKEL. Yes, Nickel, the metal most people only meet in their pocket change, has walked off with the top plate in the great metal cook-off. When I last tasted this pot, Iron and Steel had slammed onto the pass first. Now the kitchen has flipped and the girders are lying cold on the counter.
Let's look at the pantry, because the ingredients tell a very different story. Britannica calls steel by far the most widely used material for building the world's infrastructure, with global raw steel output in 2013 coming in at well over a billion tons against tens of millions for aluminum. A Congressional Research Service report says construction alone took nearly half of US steel demand in 2021, with cars taking about a quarter. On the other burner, the European Commission's JRC, reviewing IEA and IRP outlooks, expects copper demand to nearly double by 2040 thanks to its conductivity, and lithium demand to rise nearly ninefold on the back of EV batteries.
And where does nickel fit? It's a key ingredient in many a lithium-ion battery cathode. But a 2024 Nature Communications study found that today's production of nickel, copper, lithium and friends would in theory be enough to cover US EV goals, and that other, non-battery sectors often dominate total demand for these minerals. So Nickel is a fine garnish, sure. Main course? The pantry isn't so sure.

The crowd doesn't care. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people put real money behind their palates, Nickel is plating up at 30% consensus, with Copper simmering behind at 24%. Further down the line: 3 other sides. That's 25 traders and $43,104 on the table, all in less than a day of service. That's a fast, hot kitchen, and Nickel came out of it with the crowd's conviction.
Now my tasting notes, and this is opinion, served hot. This is a dessert vote. The crowd tasted the future, all those battery cells, and gave the trophy to the shiny glaze while ignoring the stock that makes every other dish possible. Copper carries every electron in your house. Steel holds up the house. Nickel? Nickel brings flair. I respect flair, darling, but nobody ever built a bridge out of flair. My plate goes to Copper: humble, conductive, and about to be in twice the demand. Steel deserves an apology.
What to watch next: whether Copper can turn up the heat before the market closes, and whether the steel loyalists come back to defend their girders. The stove is still on. If you think the crowd overseasoned this one, grab an apron and join the market on Morfi. Put your money where your mouth is, and may the best metal win.
