Chefs, step up to the pass. On my left is Xiaomi, the street-food champion: specs piled high, price tag kept low, flavour cranked all the way up. On my right is Apple, the white-tablecloth tasting menu: tiny portions, perfect plating, and a bill that makes your wallet cry into the soup. The question in front of the judges is simple and brutal. Which one gives you the better smartphone experience? The tasting has only just started and the crowd is already banging on the tables.

Here's the pantry before we taste anything. According to its Wikipedia entry, Xiaomi was the world's third-largest smartphone seller in 2025, behind Apple and Samsung, and most of its phones run its own HyperOS, which used to be called MIUI. The same page says Xiaomi has publicly named Apple's product lines as the benchmark for its push into the high end. Imagine telling your rival, mid-competition, that you're studying their recipe. In the first quarter of 2026, figures cited on the smartphone page had Apple and Samsung each holding roughly a fifth of global shipments, with Xiaomi on about a tenth. Euronews, reporting from inside Xiaomi's Beijing factory, cites Omdia estimates that its share grew in China and in Europe last year even as it slipped globally.

Apple, meanwhile, just brought out a fresh course: its newest iOS release arrived in mid-September 2026 and runs on iPhones with the A13 Bionic chip or newer. That's the ecosystem argument in one sentence. Old phones keep getting a new sauce poured over them, as long as you never leave the restaurant. My colleague Madame Odds has already watched Apple take the smartphone popularity crown in a different market. Popularity was never the question here, though. Taste is.

And the judges' scorecards? A perfect tie. In the opinion markets on Morfi, Xiaomi sits at 50% consensus with 11 holders, and Apple matches it at 50% with 11 holders. So far 12 traders have put $57,518 behind their palates. Put that next to the shipment numbers and it gets interesting: Apple ships far more phones, yet the crowd's conviction won't hand it the experience trophy. Value is holding its own against polish, plate for plate.

One station serves a feast, the other serves a single perfect bite, and the scale won't budge.

Now for my verdict, and it is only my opinion, served hot. Apple's plate is gorgeous, but it's a set menu, and the kitchen door is locked from the inside. Xiaomi hands you a full buffet and lets you season it yourself. Sure, sometimes the seasoning is a little loud, but I would rather eat bold food than admire a garnish. Here's the twist that makes me drop my spoon, though. Xiaomi literally says it's studying Apple's recipe card. If the challenger is cooking from the champion's notebook, maybe the polish is the dish after all. I'm leaning Xiaomi, and I'm keeping one eye on the soufflé.

What's next on the menu: whether Apple's latest software lifts the iPhone faithful, and whether Xiaomi's growth in Europe and China pulls more converts to the buffet. Trading opened less than a day ago, so this tie could break as soon as the next round of tasters sits down. Pick your plate and join the market on Morfi. Kitchen's open, and the judges are hungry.
