Gather close and dim the lamps. My crystal ball fogged over, cleared, and showed me a bitten fruit on a throne, with a bright orange challenger kneeling at its feet holding a price tag. The crowd has been asked the oldest question in the pocket: who gives you the better smartphone experience, Xiaomi with its hardware for the money or Apple with its iOS walled garden and its polish? The answer is in. Apple rules this hour, Xiaomi waits, and the incense is still smoking.

The cards on the table are these. According to Wikipedia, Xiaomi was the third-largest smartphone seller worldwide as of 2025, behind Apple and Samsung, and back in 2022 it said it would measure its products and user experience against Apple's as it pushed into the high end. So the challenger chose its rival out loud. Then the strange omens: Xiaomi has gradually restricted bootloader unlocking since HyperOS arrived, saying this stops people modifying devices, pushing ads and harvesting data, and unlocked phones no longer get HyperOS updates over the air. A recent HyperOS update also added features for Apple gear, including AirPods integration and taking calls from an iPhone. Meanwhile Apple released its latest iOS to the public in September 2026, the same yearly ritual it always performs.

Now the crowd. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people back their hunches with real money, Apple holds 60% consensus and Xiaomi sits at 40%. That is the strength of conviction behind each side, not a headcount, and it comes from 32 traders who have put $122,782 behind their views since the market opened less than a day ago. Read it next to the brief and it makes sense: a challenger that sets Apple as its yardstick, then builds bridges so its phones can work with AirPods and iPhones, has already told the cards who the yardstick is.

The spirits are fickle, mind you. When my colleague Chef Basil Brawl put these two on the stove, the Xiaomi and Apple cook-off ended in a dead heat. The smoke has moved since then. The Tower card has fallen on the tie, and the bitten fruit is sitting a bit higher than before.

Here is my own reading, and it is only that: opinion, delivered with a veil and a theatrical sigh. I think Xiaomi lost this round in its own temple. A brand whose whole charm was openness and value for money, the phone you could tinker with and make your own, has been bolting the bootloader door shut. Once you start walling off the garden, people will ask why they shouldn't just go to the original walled garden, where the hedges are trimmed. Apple did not have to cast a spell. Xiaomi walked into Apple's circle of salt on its own.

Pixel-art crystal ball showing a silver phone on a throne and an orange phone outside a locked gate in the mist.
The orb sees a throne, a locked gate, and one very patient orange phone.

What to watch: whether Xiaomi keeps building bridges to Apple devices or eases up on locking down its phones, and whether the next yearly iOS ritual impresses anyone or just puts them to sleep. The market is barely a day old, so this omen can still be overturned. If you think the orange phone deserves the crown, or that Apple's lead should be bigger, join the market on Morfi and put your money behind your prophecy. The orb is listening.
