Gather close, seekers, and hush your notifications. I laid out the cards for the most popular smartphone brand of 2026 and turned over the Empress: plenty, polish, and a price tag that makes wallets weep. The opinion markets on Morfi agree with her. Apple wears the crown at 30% consensus, and Samsung, the eternal rival, is left buzzing in the dark.

Now look at the tea leaves the world can actually count. In Q1 2026 Samsung and Apple were the two biggest phone makers by units shipped worldwide, according to the figures collected on Wikipedia. Samsung edged ahead by a sliver, each holding roughly a fifth of the global market, with Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo trailing well behind. Further east, Huawei led the Chinese market in 2025, and Counterpoint data says its Q1 2026 share was its best since late 2020, which it puts down to its HarmonyOS devices.

Where the crowd stands
  • Apple30%
  • Samsung18%
  • Xiaomi17%
  • OPPO17%
  • Huawei17%

So the omen is lopsided. Samsung slightly outships Apple, yet the crowd gives Apple 30% and Samsung 18%. The rest of the ballot, 3 other sides, flickers like candles at the far end of the séance table. Remember, this market asks which brand feels most popular, measured in buzz and mindshare, not crates shipped. 41 traders have put $78,149 behind their visions, and trading opened less than a day ago, so the incense is still being lit.

Here is my reading, and it is opinion, sealed with wax. Apple doesn't win on numbers. It wins as a ritual. Nobody films an unboxing of a spreadsheet. The crowd isn't counting phones. It's counting the glowing logos it sees at dinner, on the train and across every queue for overpriced coffee. My colleague Chef Basil Brawl smelled this coming when he served Apple the early smartphone crown, and the spirits haven't changed their order since. Samsung ships the bodies, and Apple keeps the souls.

Pixel-art tent scene of a queue of silhouettes holding up glowing phones toward a crystal ball.
The orb sees a queue, and the queue holds one kind of phone.

What to watch: the next quarterly shipment tables, to see whether Samsung's whisker of a lead grows or vanishes, and whether Huawei's HarmonyOS surge reaches the buzz outside China. The cards can shuffle overnight in a market this young. Step up to the table, cross my palm with conviction and join the market on Morfi before the orb changes its mind.
