Nintendo vs Xbox: The Crowd's Money Can't Pick, and PC Is Laughing From the Back

Three Morfi markets, one split verdict: Nintendo won a round, Xbox won two, and a third party keeps crashing the fight.

Picture a boardroom in the years before the first Xbox existed. Microsoft, flush with Windows money, tried to get a meeting with Nintendo executives about potentially buying the company. Nintendo declined to go any further. So Microsoft built its own box instead. It launched on November 15, 2001, and it has been annoying Nintendo's worldview ever since.

That is the whole rivalry in one scene. One side makes hardware that nobody else dares to copy. The other brings a PC-derived machine, an online-first mindset and a very large wallet. Famous console wars were Nintendo against Sega and PlayStation against Xbox, so this one is less a war than a long argument about what a games company is for. That argument never settles, which is why it keeps coming back.

It keeps coming back on Morfi, where real people back their opinions with money. In three markets this autumn, the numbers all coming from opinion markets rather than sales charts, Nintendo finished ahead of Xbox once and Xbox finished ahead twice. The margins were slim every time, and in two of the three a PC-shaped shadow sat well above both of them. We are three columnists and we disagree on nearly all of it.

Roll the keynote. The NES revived the U.S. games industry after the 1983 crash and sold nearly 62 million units worldwide. Then came the Wii U, weak sales, and in 2012 the company's first loss as a video game company. Dead and buried, right? Wrong. March 3, 2017: the Switch drops. As of December 2025 it has shipped over 155 million units and is Nintendo's best-selling console ever. The Switch 2 landed on June 5, 2025. That's a comeback arc with a final boss.

And the strategy is the flex. The Switch was a blue ocean play: no feature-for-feature slugfest with the Xbox One, just a device that is hard to copy. Xbox spent years chasing specs. Nintendo spent years chasing fun. Which one still sells out on launch day? Exactly.

Now the crowd. In the biggest market, on who shapes 2026 gaming culture, Nintendo sat at 18 consensus against Xbox at 15. Ahead. In the other two, Xbox edged us by one point, then three. That is a rounding error with a controller attached. Dex will wave his two wins around. I'll wave 155 million.

Xbox Is Down Two Scores and Still Winning the Quarter

Folks, let's go to the replay. November 15, 2001. Microsoft walks into a house built by Nintendo and Sony and sells 1.5 million units before the year is out, with Halo: Combat Evolved doing the heavy lifting. It first outsold the GameCube and the Dreamcast, then sold 24 million overall. Is the ledger ugly? Yes. Microsoft lost over $4 billion on that first Xbox. But you don't judge a heavyweight by the first round's bruises, you judge him by whether he's still standing.

He's still standing. Look at the scoreboard from Morfi's markets. On the console-type question Xbox took 20 consensus to Nintendo's 19. On PC against console, Xbox consoles took 23 to Nintendo consoles at 20, and Kiki's colleague story even had Xbox grabbing silver. Two of three markets. That is a series lead, Max.

Yes, the Switch is a monster. I'll hand Max the trophy for sales. But this crowd wasn't asked who sold more. It was asked who matters, and when real money says Xbox, a PC-derived box with no handheld to its name, that tells me the brand has legs. Down in the standings, up in the second half. Call it a comeback in slow motion.

you're both fighting for second place and it's honestly adorable

ok so. the thing about this rivalry is that the crowd keeps putting nintendo and xbox in the same market and then keeps handing the trophy to someone who isn't in the fight. pc gaming sat at 35 consensus in both of the last two markets. nobody else got within nine points of it. pc gaming wins the console war without even being a console, which is the funniest sentence i've typed this year.

the first market, the culture one, had playstation on top at 27, and chef basil brawl's kitchen metaphor left nintendo holding a mushroom. nintendo 18, xbox 15, roblox also 15. so xbox and roblox tied, and roblox is a thing children build restaurants inside. this is fine.

my take, as opinion: 'nintendo or xbox' is the wrong question because they stopped being rivals ages ago. one sells a toy you take on the bus, the other sells a doorway into a pc ecosystem. the brief even says nintendo went blue ocean to avoid fighting xbox one head on. you can't lose a fight you declined to attend. so my pick is both, neither, and steam.

Round table

Max Hype
Dex, straight up: you won two markets by one point and three points. Is that a dynasty or a typo? My prediction, and it's only opinion: the Switch 2 keeps Nintendo's number climbing the next time the crowd votes on culture.
Dex Blitz
Max, it's a dynasty in the making, and a win is a win. A fair question back: does a console that sold over 155 million units need a market to feel loved? My opinion: Xbox stays slightly ahead of Nintendo in the console-only markets, and the margin stays within a few points.
Kiki Scroll
dex, you lost over $4 billion on the first one and you're calling it legs? kidding, mostly. my prediction, purely vibes: pc gaming holds the top spot in any market that lets it in.
Dex Blitz
Kiki, if PC is so dominant, why did Xbox take silver in the market where it was allowed to play? That's a chip on the shoulder and a statement. Opinion: that silver gets repeated.
Kiki Scroll
because 'xbox consoles' is secretly a pc-adjacent brand and everyone knows it. okay, fair, that's a hot take and i'm leaning on it. my other prediction: playstation returns the moment anyone asks about culture.
Max Hype
Kiki, you keep saying nobody's fighting. Then why did Nintendo beat Xbox in the one market about cultural impact? Because culture is what we do. Opinion: the next culture market tilts to Nintendo again.
Dex Blitz
Max, that culture market had traders spread across six sides, and neither of us topped the board. I'll take consistency over one good night. Opinion: the rivalry stays too close to call, and the crowd keeps betting on it for exactly that reason.
