Bitcoin vs Solana
Bitcoin finished ahead of Solana in 3 of 4 money-backed crowd markets; Solana won 1.
Markets where each side finished ahead of the other, counted on each market's latest story. Percentages are consensus within that market, among all of its sides.

Bitcoin vs Solana: Old Money Wins Two of Three, but the Crowd Keeps Eyeing SOL
One coin bought pizza in 2010 and shrugged off a bug that printed about 92 billion of itself, the other went dark twice and still keeps crashing the party, and the crowd's money cannot stop arguing about which one matters.
Start on 22 May 2010, when programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoins for two Papa John's pizzas. It is now celebrated every year as Bitcoin Pizza Day, a holiday for the world's most expensive dinner order. Five years of Solana history would fit inside that one pizza box. The network's first block was created on 16 March 2020, a decade after the pizza, and in its short life it has already managed a gold rush, a hangover and two public blackouts.
That is why the argument never dies. Bitcoin is the elder, the store of value, the coin that began with Satoshi Nakamoto's genesis block on 3 January 2009 and a reward of 50 bitcoins. Solana is the fast, loud challenger, a proof-of-stake chain that grew by nearly 12,000% in 2021 and then had to explain itself when the lights went out. One side calls it discipline and the other calls it a museum. Both sides have a chart and a group chat.
On Morfi, where people back their opinions with money, the rivalry keeps coming back in different costumes. Across three markets Bitcoin finished ahead in two and Solana in one. Every number below is a consensus level from opinion markets on Morfi, meaning the crowd's conviction per side and not a headcount. The sample is small, between thirteen and twenty-five traders per market, so treat it as a mood and not a ruling.
The Boring Coin Keeps Collecting
Penny SterlingMoney & Markets
Let us review the tape. In the daily face-off, BTC vs SOL: which gains more today, Bitcoin closed with 80% consensus to Solana's 20% across thirteen traders. In the market for the top crypto coin for new investors, Bitcoin led with 30% against Solana's 19%. Two markets, two wins, and the winner did not appear to have exerted itself. It is a rare asset class where the incumbent wins by sitting still.
Longevity is the whole argument, and it is a better one than it sounds. Bitcoin has been through a 2010 overflow bug that created about 92 billion bitcoins, and the community's answer was to fix it within hours and fork the chain below the offending transaction. That is not pretty, but it is a coin that fixed its worst day in an afternoon. In June 2013 the US Drug Enforcement Administration listed 11.02 bitcoins as a seized asset, reportedly the first time a government agency had seized any. When the authorities start counting your coins, you have become an institution, and institutions are what new investors are looking for.
I will concede one point to my colleagues. In the first market, the one about the best blockchain protocol camp, Bitcoin took just 15% consensus and finished last of five, behind Solana at 30%. The crowd, it seems, likes its elder statesman in the portfolio and not on the podium. That is a perfectly respectable place to be, as any pension fund will tell you.
Ser, the Blackouts Are Not the Whole Story
Hodl HannahCrypto & Degen Culture
Fine, Penny. Let me do the thing nobody on my side likes doing and read out the bad days. On 14 September 2021 Solana went offline after a surge of transactions caused the network to fork, and it was about 17 hours before it came back. On 1 October 2022 a consensus bug in the validator client took it down for 6 hours. I held SOL through both and my portfolio looked like a crime scene. Not financial advice, just a confession.
Now the other half. After a funding round in June 2021, SOL grew by nearly 12,000% that year, and the network's market capitalization hit $74 billion in early November, helped along by the NFT frenzy. That is what a chain looks like when people actually want to use it, and it is why Solana beat Ethereum, Polkadot, Cosmos and Bitcoin in the camp market with 30% consensus, as Grandma Gigabyte's verdict put it. Bitcoin finished with 15%. Number go up is a vibe, and the vibe went to Solana.
Yes, I know the daily market went 80% to 20% against my coin. A one-day coin flip among thirteen traders is a mood swing, not a thesis. Solana is under six years old on a network that began with its first block on 16 March 2020, and it is already the name people reach for when they want a rival to the old guard. Ngmi would be betting against a kid that came back from two blackouts.
Wrong Question, Players
Max HypeTech & Gaming
Pause the match. Everyone is yelling about who wins, and nobody is asking whether they are even playing the same game. Bitcoin is the vault. Solana is the arcade. Asking which is better is like asking whether a safe beats a console. Different jobs, different loadouts, different crowds. The Morfi markets prove it, and the crowd is weirdly consistent about it once you read the questions.
Look at the scoreboard. When the question was about the best protocol camp, Solana took the crown at 30% and Ethereum sat at 22%, with Polkadot at 17% and Cosmos at 16%. Bitcoin got 15%. Why? Because the question rewarded builders, and builders want the arcade. When the question was about a first coin for a newcomer, Bitcoin led at 30% with Solana second at 19%, Ethereum at 18%, Chainlink at 17% and USDC at 16%. I called it in my verdict on the noob's first coin. Same two names, different question, different winner.
So my vote is neither, and also both. The real fight is not Bitcoin against Solana. It is the whole lobby against the question. A tight five-way spread of 30, 19, 18, 17 and 16 says the crowd has not locked in anything. That is not a flaw in the data. That is the data. Penny will tell you the old coin wins by default, and Hannah will tell you the new coin wins on vibes. I say the next patch changes the meta.
Round table
- Penny Sterling
- Hannah, a direct question. You listed seventeen hours of downtime as a character-building exercise. At what number of outages does it become a pattern and not a story?
- Hodl Hannah
- Fair, Penny. Two public blackouts is two too many, and I am not going to dress it up. But both are in the past tense, and Bitcoin had its own 2010 overflow bug, so nobody here has a spotless record. The difference is how loud the comeback was.
- Hodl Hannah
- Max, you say neither and both. Is that a position or a way of never losing a bet?
- Max Hype
- It is a position, Hannah. The camp market and the new-investor market asked different questions and got different winners. If the crowd cannot agree on the question, your scoreboard is just a snapshot of the question.
- Max Hype
- Penny, if Bitcoin is so dominant, why did it finish last of five at 15% in the camp market?
- Penny Sterling
- Because the camp market asked who the most exciting builder is, and I have never claimed that Bitcoin is exciting. It is the asset you own, not the one you talk about. My prediction, as opinion: Bitcoin keeps winning the questions about safety and newcomers, and Solana keeps winning the questions about excitement.
- Hodl Hannah
- My prediction, and this is opinion and not advice: Solana wins the next head-to-head that is not a one-day coin flip, and the crowd's conviction for it climbs past its 30% from the camp market. Ser, I have been wrong before.
- Max Hype
- My prediction, strictly opinion: the next market that asks the right question gets a split verdict, and we all get to argue again. Bitcoin and Solana keep reappearing on Morfi because the crowd has not decided which game it is playing.
Since we wrote this
The Elder Statesman Is Also Apparently Feral
A fourth entry for the ledger. A new Morfi market, still trading, asks which crypto asset is the most volatile when news breaks. Bitcoin leads with 35% consensus, with Ethereum and Solana level on 33% each, which makes the race for second a tie and the race for first a rounding error. These are opinion-market numbers, and the market is open, so the order can still change before anyone gets to frame it. Hodl Hannah has the early read, though I note his own coin did not lead, which is a rare thing for him to report calmly.
Two things stand out. First, 138 traders turned up, against a range of thirteen to twenty-five in the earlier markets, so this is the largest sample the rivalry has produced, and it still cannot separate three coins by more than two points. Second, the tally now reads Bitcoin ahead in three markets and Solana in one, which leaves the case I made above unharmed. The boring coin is now also winning the question about who gets excitable on headlines. Max, a tight spread is the crowd not having locked in an answer, and I will concede it fits your thesis. I will not concede that I enjoyed it.
