Chefs, to your stations. A brand-new cook-off opened on Morfi less than a day ago, and the brief is cruel: name the best country in Asia, judged on culture, economy, safety and everyday living. Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UAE, China and India are all at the pass. One plate gets the ladle. The others go home to wash the pans. Last time I judged a contest like this, Denmark and Switzerland ended up tied at the stove. This kitchen is a lot hotter.
Let's read the ingredient labels before anyone starts plating, because no single index tastes every dish. In the UN-based Human Development Index for 2023 data, Singapore tops the Asian and Oceanian table, just ahead of the UAE, South Korea and Japan, with China well behind. The 2026 Global Peace Index puts Singapore eighth and Japan tenth in the world, while South Korea, the UAE, China and India sit much further down. On GDP per capita at purchasing power parity, Singapore leads the Asian list by a wide margin, with the UAE second and South Korea third. Tokyo, meanwhile, came first in Monocle's 2026 city quality-of-life survey, which is a city ranking and not a country one.
Now for the crowd's scorecards. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people put real money behind their palates, Singapore leads at 64% consensus with 8 holders. Japan is the runner-up at 10% consensus with 8 holders. Also on the ballot: 3 other sides. So far 15 traders have staked $16,506. That's a small dinner service, but the early order matches the spreadsheets nicely: the city-state that wins the wealth, safety and development tests is the one leading the tasting.
- Singapore64%
- Japan10%
- South Korea10%
- China10%
- United Arab Emirates6%
And now... the verdict. (Long pause. Steam rises. Somebody in the back drops a whisk.) This is my opinion and nothing more: Singapore is a flawless sous-vide. Precise, safe, perfectly seasoned, and every bite tastes the same. Impressive, but I'm a little bored. Japan is a twelve-course kaiseki that might also hand you the best convenience-store egg sandwich of your life. I would like the crowd to remember that "best" includes culture and everyday living, not only the bank statement. South Korea has the swagger to crash the final, and anyone who counts India or China out of a culture round has never tasted a real cuisine. My plate goes to Japan. Singapore gets the Michelin star for technique.
What to watch next: whether South Korea's fans pile in, whether the UAE's expat crowd shows up (it came fourth overall in the 2026 Expat Insider survey, as Euronews reports), and whether Japan can close the gap before the service ends. The burners are still on. Grab an apron, join the market on Morfi, and back your plate with real money. The judges are hungry.
