Cardano vs Ethereum
Ethereum finished ahead of Cardano in 1 of 2 money-backed crowd markets; Cardano won 0, and 1 ended level.
Markets where each side finished ahead of the other, counted on each market's latest story. Percentages are consensus within that market, among all of its sides.
- Cardano 16%
- Ethereum 30%
Cardano vs Ethereum: Crowd Money Ties Them, Then Hands Ethereum a Testnet Trophy
A founders' feud from 2014 still fuels the loudest argument in crypto, and when real money met it on Morfi, the crowd shrugged, tied it once and gave Ethereum the only win.
Start in 2014, with a breakup. Charles Hoskinson walked out of the Ethereum project after a dispute with co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Hoskinson wanted to take venture capital and build a company. Buterin wanted to keep it a nonprofit. Hoskinson went on to found the company behind Cardano, and a rivalry was born that has never really stopped talking.
It still divides people because both sides have a story they love. Ethereum went live on 30 July 2015 under the name Frontier, survived the 2016 DAO hack and the contentious fork that produced Ethereum Classic, and kept its seat as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Cardano arrived in 2017 as the biggest coin on proof of stake, hit a $77 billion market cap in May 2021, and keeps claiming Ethereum is neither safe nor scalable. One camp says battle-tested, the other says carefully designed. Both say the other is overrated.
On Morfi, where real people back opinions with money, the rivalry keeps turning up uninvited. Across two markets, Cardano finished ahead in none, Ethereum in one, and the two were level in the other. All the numbers below come from opinion markets on Morfi, and the percentages are consensus levels, meaning the crowd's conviction per side, not headcounts. Our three columnists have read the tape and disagree about what it means.
Cardano Is the Patch Notes Nobody Read
Max HypeTech & Gaming
Okay, chat. Let's talk about the underdog build. Cardano dropped in 2017 as the largest cryptocurrency on proof of stake. Day one. While everyone else was still arguing about the future, Cardano shipped it. Then in May 2021 it hit a $77 billion market cap, the fourth highest for any cryptocurrency at the time. Fourth! On the global leaderboard! Tell me that's not a clutch run.
And the pitch has never been subtle. Cardano's public claim is that Ethereum isn't safe or scalable. Spicy? Absolutely. Is the design-first philosophy a feature, not a bug? I say yes. Ethereum's origin story includes a record US$150 million DAO crowd sale, then US$50 million stolen in June 2016 and a fork that split the whole chain. Cardano's whole brand is: let's not do that.
Now the scoreboard, because I respect the grind. In the first Morfi market, Cardano sat at 18% consensus, exactly level with Ethereum at 18%. A tie. With the incumbent. Across 55 traders, with Avalanche stealing the lobby at 30%. In the testnet market, Cardano's Mithril Testnet pulled 16% consensus, ahead of Solana's cluster and Cosmos Hermes, both on 15%. Penny will call that a participation trophy. I call it a respawn point. We covered the verdict for Holesky the other week, and yes, Ethereum won that one. Rematch when the patch lands.
Incumbency Is Also a Strategy
Penny SterlingMoney & Markets
Ethereum has been the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization since January 2018, behind only bitcoin, and was still there in 2021. Cardano's finest hour in that period was reaching fourth. It is difficult to describe a three-year gap between fourth and second as a rivalry. It is closer to a long and polite follow-up email.
Ethereum's record is not spotless, and I will not pretend otherwise. The DAO raised a record US$150 million in 2016, lost US$50 million of it to a hacker in June, and the community responded with a contentious hard fork. Ethereum Classic is what remains of the dissent. Still, a network that has a crisis, argues about it in public and carries on is one the market has had cause to examine closely. Cardano's safety pitch has the advantage of having been tested largely by itself.
The money agrees, in a restrained way. In the testnet market Ethereum Holesky led at 30% consensus, with Cardano's Mithril Testnet third at 16% across 42 traders. In the Layer-1 market cap question, Ethereum and Cardano tied at 18%, though Avalanche took the crown at 30% and Ethereum was, as I put it at the time, asked to wait in reception. A tie in a market that neither of them won is not a victory for Cardano. It is two companies sharing a waiting room.
Ser, You're Both Asking the Wrong Question
Hodl HannahCrypto & Degen Culture
Confession first. I have been wrong about every chart I ever loved, and my portfolio has the scars. So take this as a degen's observation, not advice: Cardano versus Ethereum is the wrong bet. Look at what the crowd actually did. In the Layer-1 market, Avalanche led at 30% consensus. Solana sat at 19%. Ethereum and Cardano shared 18%, and BNB Chain trailed at 16%. The headline fight finished joint third. Ngmi, as a duel.
Then the testnet market. Ethereum Holesky led at 30%, but the real story was Polygon Amoy at 24%, well ahead of Cardano's Mithril at 16%. Our Thunderdome opener was about degens putting real money on fake-money chains, which is the most honest thing crypto has ever done. Nobody was backing a founder feud. They were backing whichever chain they thought would be interesting next.
So my wild card is neither. The 2014 split between Hoskinson and Buterin is a great origin myth, and I will happily watch it replay forever. But the crowd's conviction keeps drifting to third options, to Avalanche, to Solana, to Polygon. The rivalry is real. It is just no longer the main event. Number go up for whoever the crowd hasn't noticed yet. That is not a tip, ser, that is a mood.
Round table
- Max Hype
- Penny, you called a tie a shared waiting room. Cardano matched Ethereum at 18% consensus. Isn't that the upset of the season?
- Penny Sterling
- Max, it is an upset only if you ignore that Ethereum won the testnet market at 30% and Cardano finished third at 16%. A draw and a loss is a record, not a revolution.
- Hodl Hannah
- Both of you, then explain Avalanche. It led the Layer-1 market at 30%. Where was the founder feud then?
- Penny Sterling
- Hannah, it was in the reception area with Ethereum. Feuds make good history and poor price discovery. Opinion: Ethereum stays the crowd's default pick in any market where it is simply named.
- Max Hype
- Hannah, if third options keep winning, does Cardano even need to beat Ethereum? My opinion: no, it needs one big market where it is the only story. Then watch Mithril climb.
- Hodl Hannah
- Fair, Max. My opinion, and not advice: the next Morfi market will crown a chain nobody here has argued for, and we will all pretend we saw it coming.
- Penny Sterling
- I will pretend with dignity. My prediction, purely opinion: Ethereum keeps the narrow lead in head-to-head questions, and Cardano keeps tying its way into our hearts.
- Max Hype
- Bookmark it. In my opinion Cardano takes its first outright win before the year is out. Rematch hype starts now.
