The result is in, and the boxer engine has beaten the badge. In a fresh Morfi opinion market asking "Audi vs Subaru: Which brand do you prefer?", the crowd has put Subaru at 60% consensus against Audi's 40%. In this market, the sensible shoe has outsold the Italian loafer.
The question asks voters to weigh design, reliability reputation, driving feel and overall value as of 2026-10-14, and the timing did Audi no favours. Euronews reports that Audi's share of a worldwide steering-screw recall covers more than six hundred thousand vehicles, with the rest of the near three-million total tied to models from the wider Volkswagen Group. Audi says road salt and other environmental conditions corrode a screw in some Q3 steering systems over several years, and that the fix takes up to an hour and is free. A free repair is generous. It is not the same thing as a brochure.
The older reliability tables don't help Audi either. In the French UFC-Que choisir index for 2023, Subaru scored higher than Audi, though only by a few points. Go back to 2010 and NPR, reporting on a Consumer Reports survey, listed an Audi A6 variant among the worst for predicted reliability. Meanwhile Subaru has a new product to talk about: the seventh-generation Outback went on sale in North America in late 2025 as a 2026 model. Reputations depreciate slowly, which is more than can be said for the cars.

The trading so far: 20 unique traders have put $801,995 behind their views, and the market opened less than a day ago. Keep in mind these figures measure conviction, not a headcount, so the crowd isn't saying most people prefer Subaru. It is saying the people with an opinion feel more strongly about Subaru. Early-session conviction, much like a new-car smell, may not last. The verdict also matches what my colleague Chef Basil Brawl saw in his Subaru-versus-Audi cook-off. After Madame Odds watched BMW beat Audi, Ingolstadt now has two losses in these markets.
My view, and it is only a view: this is a value trade. Audi still sells the better interior and the better-looking car, and nobody has ever dreamed about an Outback in a rain-soaked car advert. But the market description rewards reliability and overall value, and on those terms the crowd has picked the car that is dull and dependable over the one that is beautiful and occasionally needs a new steering screw. As an investment thesis it is very boring, and boring theses tend to pay.
Watch whether the recall coverage fades and Audi's backing recovers once the newsflow quiets down, and whether any fresh reliability data comes out to back either side. Until then, the market is open on Morfi to anyone who thinks the crowd has mispriced the four rings. Bring an opinion. You don't need to bring road salt.
