Kitchen, quiet please. Tonight's mystery basket holds one ingredient, wobbling on the counter like an underset panna cotta: the share price of Meta Platforms, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Two chefs stand at their stations. One swears this dish will rise. The other says it's heading for the floor. The market opened less than a day ago, and the knives are already out.

Let's look at what's in the pantry. In its latest quarterly filing, Meta reports net income of more than fifteen billion dollars for the three months to June 30, 2026, and that same filing admits the stock has been volatile and probably will stay that way. Since its 2012 IPO it has traded anywhere from under twenty dollars to almost eight hundred. That's quite a range of oven temperatures. The worry is the AI spending bill. After its third-quarter 2025 results, Euronews reports the shares fell more than seven percent after hours once Meta warned that 2026 costs would be much higher, even with advertising holding up. France 24 notes the company expects to spend seventy to seventy-two billion dollars on capital investment this year, and that most analysts think the AI bet pays off through better-targeted ads and gadgets like smart glasses.

There's a bitter note too. NPR reports that in spring 2026 Meta lost two pivotal court cases, cut hundreds of jobs and seemed to quietly push its metaverse dream to the back of the walk-in freezer. Meta says it will appeal. So the basket is rich in cash, heavy on spending and lightly salted with legal trouble.

Now for the judges' table. In the opinion market on Morfi, where people put real money behind what they believe, "Up" leads at 54% consensus with 13 holders. "Down" trails at 46% with 10 holders. So far 13 traders have staked $28,102 on their opinions. That lines up with the analysts' cheerful seasoning in the brief: the crowd seems to taste the advertising profit first and the eye-watering spending bill second. Remember, though, that this is conviction, not a headcount. And with a market this young, the soufflé hasn't been out of the oven long enough to show whether it holds.

One soufflé rises, one sinks, and the crowd is already holding its spoons.

Pause. Lean in. Here's my verdict, and it's pure opinion from a man who has tasted too many overpromised tasting menus. Meta cooks like a chef who buys every truffle at the market and swears the bill will pay for itself. Sometimes it does! The ad business is the bread and butter, warm and dependable. But that seventy-billion-dollar shopping spree is a garnish the size of a main course, and the metaverse plate already came back to the kitchen half-eaten. I'll give "Up" the edge on flavour. I'm docking points for portion control, though. One wobble in AI returns and this dish slides right off the plate.

What should you watch? Meta's next quarterly report, any change to that capital spending forecast, and the appeals of those spring court rulings. Any one of them could flip this cook-off before dessert. Think you can read the oven better than the crowd? Join the market on Morfi, pick your station and put your money where your palate is.
