Draw the velvet curtains, children, and come close to the orb. Tonight the spirits of crypto bring a strange omen. A coin built for secrecy, a coin whose whole religion is hiding in the shadows, has asked its followers which road it should take next. The smoke cleared, and the card that came up was not the Hermit with his lantern. It was the Emperor, seated on his throne of paperwork. The privacy crowd has chosen compliance. Fetch the smelling salts.

First, the earthly facts, which the orb only reflects. According to Wikipedia, Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in October 2016, with a ledger encrypted using zero-knowledge proofs. The same page records that the Winklevoss twins put fifty million dollars into Cypherpunk Technologies, a treasury company focused on ZEC, in November 2025, and that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission closed its probe into Zcash in January 2026. Then in August 2026, Cypherpunk announced in a press release a mining arm it called the largest Zcash fleet, carrying close to a fifth of the network's hashrate. It also said its strategy is anchored by the ZODL wallet and aims to hold a twentieth of all ZEC supply. Note the pattern in the tea leaves: the recent moves came from outside companies, not from any community vote. The research found no source showing what the community as a whole agrees on.

Which is exactly the empty chair the Morfi crowd has rushed to fill. On the opinion market, "Regulatory compliance strategy" leads with 54% consensus, ahead of "Shielded UX upgrades" at 14%. Further down the spread lie 3 other sides. 25 unique traders have put $152,966 behind their opinions, and the market opened less than a day ago, so the candle has barely started to drip.

Seen through the glass, it makes a twisted kind of sense. When the regulators have just put their pitchfork away and treasury companies with Wall Street names are buying in, the crowd seems to be reading the room more than the old manifesto. Strangers who come in through the front door of a regulated exchange need a coin that won't get them thrown out again. My colleague Chef Basil Brawl has already seen this crowd betting Zcash breaks five grand, and big price dreams usually need institutional money that likes to keep its lawyers calm.

Pixel-art crystal ball showing a shield-shaped coin wearing a judge's wig, with tarot cards and a dimming lantern
The orb shows a shield in a judge's wig, and the Hermit's lantern is running low on oil.

Now my own prophecy, and it is only opinion, smoke and incense. I think the crowd has drawn a card it may come to regret. A privacy coin that puts the regulator's blessing first is a fortune teller who reads palms only with a notary present. The magic of Zcash was never that it was polite. It was that a person could vanish into the mist when they needed to. The "Shielded UX upgrades" side, my sentimental favourite, is the one that would actually put that mist in ordinary hands, so that hiding isn't only for people who read cryptography papers. Let the Emperor keep his throne for tonight. My hunch is that the Hermit still knows the way home.

What to watch next: whether the gap holds as the young market fills with fresh hands, whether Cypherpunk's growing weight in mining and wallets pulls the community's mood further toward the suits, and whether any real community vote ever shows up to confirm or curse the Morfi verdict. The orb only shows what the crowd believes, and the crowd changes its mind. Step into the tent and join the market on Morfi, where your conviction can move the cards.
