Draw the curtains and light the black candle, darlings. The orb is smoking and it has a verdict. In the oldest fight in the strongman circus, Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin, the Morfi crowd has put the Kremlin's man on the throne. The cards have been dealt. Before anyone starts cheering, though, look at what's lying in the diesel slick next to them.
Here's what the tea leaves had to work with. According to France 24, Trump announced in early October that he'd reached an arrangement with Putin to bring Russian diesel into American and global markets, pitched as a way to cool fuel prices before the midterms. Kyiv wasn't charmed. Radio Free Europe reports that Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it a gift to Moscow. Then the omen got darker: after the call, Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said the Russian leader rejected the prospect of peace talks and that Russia would keep fighting until it achieved all its objectives, Ukrainska Pravda reports.
Washington felt the chill too. ABC Australia reports that four Republican senators and three Democrats issued a joint statement rebuking the president, saying the United States shouldn't hand Putin a financial lifeline while Russia keeps killing Ukrainian civilians. And Putin's own crystal ball has a crack in it: in July, Russia's Public Opinion Foundation recorded his approval falling five points in a week to sixty-six percent, the steepest weekly drop since the full-scale war began. Even Ukrainska Pravda notes that the reliability of such polling is disputed.

So what does the crowd's crystal ball show? On the Morfi opinion market, Vladimir Putin leads at 55% consensus and Donald Trump trails at 24%. The rest of the ballot, 1 other side, sits in the shadows. That's 14 traders putting $43,976 behind their convictions, and the market opened less than a day ago, so the incense is barely lit. My reading is that the diesel deal made Trump look like the one who blinked: the dealmaker who came home with a fuel can while the other man kept the war going. A crowd that's watching who outmanoeuvred whom crowns the man who gave up nothing. Chef Basil Brawl had Trump grabbing the first plate in his strongman cook-off, so the cauldron has clearly been stirred.
Now Madame Odds takes off the turban and gives you her own opinion, which is only an opinion. This crowning is a bad omen. If you measure strength by who stays unmoved, you'll end up rewarding the man whose aide talks up endless war while civilians keep dying. My cards say "better" ought to mean something gentler than "didn't flinch first," and that's why I'd put my candle on the 1 other side option. A diesel deal that seven senators across party lines called a lifeline doesn't make either strongman look good. One played the hand and the other paid for the cards.
What to watch as the moon wanes: whether the diesel deal actually lowers prices before the midterms, whether more lawmakers join the rebuke, and whether Putin's home-front numbers slide again. Any of these could turn the cards over before the candle burns down. The orb is open for business, so come and back your own prophecy and join the market on Morfi before the smoke clears.
