Gather close, seekers, and lower your screen brightness. The candles are guttering and the orb has gone a cold aluminium grey. Tonight I asked it which smartphone brand holds the hearts of 2026, and it did not ring or buzz. It showed me an apple with a bite taken out of it. The crowd has given its verdict, and the throne of the pocket goes to the iPhone. The Galaxy is left spinning somewhere out past the rim of my crystal.

Before you bow, look at what the ledgers say. No 2026 poll covering all five brands has come out, so the nearest thing to an omen is shipment data, and that counts what factories send out, not what people love. By that measure Samsung and Apple were the two biggest makers worldwide in the first quarter of 2026. According to the figures collected on Wikipedia's smartphone page, Samsung shipped a hair over a fifth of the world's phones and Apple came in a whisker behind it. Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo followed a long way back, each with roughly a tenth or less.

The cards don't show love the same way. A UK consumer survey published in July 2025 found that more than half of respondents carried an iPhone and fewer than a third carried a Samsung, with no other brand getting close. Then there's the great schism of operating systems: Android, the faith Samsung belongs to, ran on about three-quarters of the world's phones in the second quarter of 2026, according to Wikipedia's HarmonyOS entry. That counts software, though, not brands. Samsung wins the warehouse and Apple wins the hearts. The crowd had to choose which one counts.

It chose hearts. On the Morfi opinion markets, Apple iPhone sits at 30% consensus and Samsung Galaxy trails at 27%, with 3 other sides further back. So far 34 traders have put $830,360 behind their beliefs, and the market opened less than a day ago, so the ink on this prophecy is still wet. The question asks about preference and perception, not cargo manifests, and the crowd answered exactly that. In my reading, nobody's heart races over a shipping container.

Now my own reading, and it's pure opinion, served with incense. I think the crowd has it right. The iPhone isn't just a phone any more. It's an amulet, worn to show which tribe you belong to. The Samsung Galaxy is the more prolific sorcerer, turning up in more hands across more lands, but popularity on a market about perception is about the halo, and Cupertino has polished its halo for years. My colleague Chef Basil Brawl smelled it early when the iPhone snatched the head chef's hat over the Galaxy, and he sensed the value-hunters lurking when Xiaomi and Apple deadlocked at the pass. The spirits keep repeating themselves, and so do the shoppers.

Pixel-art crystal ball in a candlelit tent showing a phone rising like a crown as a starry second phone drifts into the mist.
The orb sees an apple ascending and a galaxy drifting off. Try reasoning with it.

Keep an eye on the next quarter's shipment tallies. If Samsung's lead in the ledgers grows, the Galaxy faithful may storm the market and the cards could reshuffle overnight. A fresh poll on brand preference would be an even darker omen for whoever is wrong. Until then the prophecy stands, though it's barely a day old. If you think the orb is wrong, join the market on Morfi, put your money behind your hunch, and rewrite the fortune yourself.
