The verdict is in, and it points down. A Morfi opinion market asking which way bitcoin will move on Oct 15 (UTC) has gone to "Down on Oct 15 (UTC)", with "Up on Oct 15 (UTC)" finishing second in a straight two-way fight. On paper the market also allowed for range-bound drift or wild intraday swings, but in the end the crowd gave just two answers, up or down, and picked the one that hurts.
That pessimism has a track record behind it. According to ABC News, an October 14 market snapshot put bitcoin at about eighty-three and a half thousand US dollars, up a fraction of a percent, while Wall Street closed lower, with tech stocks weighed down by fears about AI and major bank shares falling. So the coin was up a little on a day when the grown-up markets were down.
Earlier in the year was rougher. Euronews reported that bitcoin slipped almost four percent and fell below seventy-six thousand dollars in mid-September after the US Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act. Before that, in June, it fell to roughly sixty-one thousand dollars, its lowest level since February, after losing more than a quarter of its value in one month as long-term holders sold. These were the people who were supposed to stay put no matter what.
- Down on Oct 15 (UTC)80%
- Up on Oct 15 (UTC)20%
Against that backdrop, the crowd settled at 80% consensus for Down and 20% for Up. It took 18 unique traders and $14,339 to get there, all in a market that had been open for less than a day. That is quick, even by crypto standards. My colleague Hodl Hannah reported that the bears grabbed the early lead when this fight opened, and they never gave it back. The bulls had the whole session to catch up and did not.
My view, and it is only a view: this verdict is less a forecast than a mood. One day of bitcoin price action is about as predictable as a toddler's lunch order, and a calm, slightly green October 14 hardly calls for gloom. Still, a crowd that remembers June and September is going to brace for the worst out of habit. Having argued before that the floor was not in, I can't really fault them for keeping a helmet nearby.
What to watch: whether the slightly firmer tone from October 14 carries into the fifteenth, and whether the selling on Wall Street spills over into crypto. If bitcoin closes the day higher, the bears will be told politely that they were right in spirit. The data comes from opinion markets on Morfi, where people put money behind their views, and you can join the market and take whichever side you think the tape will favour.
