The crowd has reached a verdict on who crashed Bitcoin, and it was not a mysterious stranger in a central bank. A Morfi opinion market asked what really caused the recent Bitcoin crash. The early answer is borrowed money: positions too big for their owners, closed out automatically when the price turned. It is an unglamorous culprit, which tends to be how you know it is plausible.
The market does not name a date, and that matters, because there are several crashes to choose from. Euronews reports that in the October 2025 sell-off, more than nineteen billion dollars of leveraged crypto positions were liquidated after Donald Trump threatened new tariffs on China. Commentators disagreed over whether the tariffs or the trading tactics did the real damage. In early June 2026, according to Euronews, Bitcoin fell to roughly sixty-one thousand dollars as long-term holders started selling after months of sitting still, while US spot exchange-traded funds logged outflows for a thirteenth straight day. Then in September, the price slipped below seventy-six thousand dollars when the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act. It is a busy crime scene.

So far the crowd has picked the October story over the others. "Liquidations and leverage unwind" leads at 35% consensus, ahead of "Macroeconomic risk-off" at 32%. Also on the ballot: 3 other sides. 31 traders have put $34,115 behind their opinions, a modest sum next to the liquidations it is trying to explain. The ranking matches the October record more closely than the June one. The crowd has clearly read the margin statements, even if it has not dated them.
In my view, the crowd is right about the mechanism, but it is letting macro off too lightly. A tariff threat may have lit the match, but the leverage was the dry kindling, and neither works without the other. Blaming the liquidations alone is like blaming gravity for a fall off a ladder you were standing on with one foot. Still, a market that calls its own excess the main cause shows a rare bit of self-awareness, and I have seen worse audits.
The verdict is barely a day old, so expect appeals. Euronews' accounts of long-term holder selling and the stalled CLARITY Act give the other sides plenty to argue with if the next sell-off has a different cause. Hodl Hannah has already covered this fight from the trading floor, and I have previously reported on the crowd's day-by-day calls on Bitcoin's direction. If you think the jury has convicted the wrong suspect, you can join the market on Morfi and back your own theory with money. Leverage is optional.
- Liquidations and leverage unwind 33.1%
- Macroeconomic risk-off 31.2%
- Regulatory pressure 12.7%
