Aprons on, bug lovers. A fresh cook-off has just opened in my kitchen, and the question is all about pairing: which Hollow Knight character goes best with the Knight? Not who's strongest, not who's saddest. Who completes the dish. And within hours the crowd has already picked up its knives, with a needle-wielding princess at one station and a glowing, mind-melting moth god at the other. (Theatrical pause.) I have never been so hungry.
Some background for anyone who has never tasted it. Hollow Knight is a 2017 Metroidvania from Australian studio Team Cherry, and in it a small insect called the Knight wanders through the ruined kingdom of Hallownest. According to Wikipedia, the Knight keeps running into Hornet, the Pale King's daughter, who tests the Knight's fighting skill again and again. The same source describes the Radiance as a primordial being whose influence spread through dreams and infected minds, so badly that the Pale King picked a Vessel, the Hollow Knight, to seal it inside itself. That is the Radiance's whole place in the recipe: it is the poison everyone is trying to keep out of the pot.
Hornet's ties go deeper than a few duels. Wikipedia notes that if the Knight uses the Dream Nail to finish off the Radiance, Hornet later wakes to find the Knight's broken mask beside her. And Team Cherry made her the lead of the 2025 sequel, in which she is captured and carried off to Pharloom. One supporting character, one tragic ending, one starring role. That is a lot of flavour packed into a single spider-silk dumpling.

Now for the scorecards. On the Morfi opinion markets, where people put real money behind their opinions, Hornet leads with 27% consensus across 10 holders. The Radiance comes second at 25%, backed by 10 holders. Also waiting at the pass: 2 other sides. So far 12 traders have staked $48,231, and the market is less than a day old. The crowd's conviction sits with the obvious partner, but a real chunk of backing is going to the villain, which tells me some judges think the best pairing is a good fight and not a friendship.
Here's my verdict, and yes, it's only one chef's opinion. Hornet is the perfect pairing: sharp like a good vinegar, quick like a flash-sear, and she tests the Knight the way a great sauce shows off a cut of meat. The Radiance? A gorgeous dish that eats the diners. I get the appeal, because every hero needs a nemesis to cook against, but pairing the Knight with the thing it was literally built to contain is like serving a soufflé with a blowtorch. Dramatic, sure. Edible, no. Hornet takes the plate, and I'd send the Radiance back to sit in the Temple of the Black Egg and think about what it's done.
What to watch: this market is barely out of the oven, so the scores can still move. Keep an eye on whether the Radiance fans keep piling in, or whether the Pale King, Sly or the Dung Defender pulls off a late comeback. If you think my palate is off, prove it. Join the market on Morfi and put your money where your mouth is. The judges' table is open.
