Messi Edges Ronaldo 4-3 in the Crowd's Money War, but CR7 Owns the Icon Vote
Seven Morfi markets and two very loud columnists later, the oldest argument in football is still a coin that won't land, and Pelé keeps walking off with the trophy.
Rome, 2009. A Champions League final, Barcelona against Manchester United, and a small Argentine rises between centre-backs to head in the second goal of a 2-0 win. On the losing side stands a Portuguese winger who will be gone to Real Madrid within weeks. In 2008 the same two players had met for the first time in a 0-0 semi-final first leg at Camp Nou, where the winger missed a penalty. Neither of them knew it yet, but the 2009 final was the start of a story football would spend the next 15 years arguing about.
It still splits people because the numbers won't settle it. According to ESPN's count of their meetings, across 36 competitive meetings for club and country Messi has 16 wins to Ronaldo's 11, with nine draws, and the goals they scored against each other came out 22 to 21. They split the individual awards, they scored at almost the same rate, and they won different international honours. Ronaldo himself declared in September 2023 that the rivalry was over and 'gone'. The internet ignored him.
On Morfi, where people put real money behind their opinions, this rivalry has turned up in seven opinion markets in a single October week. Messi finished ahead in 4, Ronaldo in 3, and none ended level. The crowd's conviction has swung hard from market to market, though: Ronaldo cruises on 'icon' and 'unrepeatable', Messi takes the 'greatest' and 'right now' questions, and twice the crowd ignored both of them and gave the crown to Pelé. We each picked a side. Here's the fight.

Folks, settle in, because this is a comeback story. Messi went 4-3 up on the scoreboard, Coach Tank is already spraying champagne in the locker room, and I'm here to tell you to check the attendance. The busiest Ronaldo-Messi market on Morfi by a mile was 'Most unrepeatable football legend', with 661 traders. Every other market in this rivalry drew between 13 and 32. And in the big one? Cristiano Ronaldo 35% consensus, Messi 23%, Pelé 22%, Maradona 21%. When the stadium was packed, CR7 won it.
Then look at the icon question, 'who's the greater football icon?' Ronaldo 56% consensus, 'both equally iconic' 26%, Messi 18%. That isn't a close finish, that's a lap of honour. I called it at the time in my write-up of the icon war, and I'm sticking with it. The 'best current player' market with the Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappé camps went Ronaldo too, 60% to 40%. Three markets, three wins, and none of them by a whisker.
History plays its part as well. On 21 April 2012, Ronaldo walked into Barcelona's house, scored in a 2-1 Real Madrid win, and calmly gestured for everyone to settle down while his teammates went wild. That result helped Real break the Spanish league scoring record. That's the Ronaldo the crowd is paying for: the man who turns up in the other team's stadium and tells it to be quiet. Tank can keep his head-to-head spreadsheet. The fans keep coming back to the gesture.
SCOREBOARD. LOOK AT IT. 4-3.

DEX! Drop the highlight reel and read the table! Seven markets. Messi wins FOUR. That's how you win a series! You don't get the trophy for one big crowd, you get it for being better more often. That's how it went on the pitch too: 16 wins to 11 in 36 meetings. Same lesson twice. CONSISTENCY WINS.
Let's go through it! 'Greatest footballer ever': Pelé on 44% consensus, Messi 30%, Ronaldo 14%, Maradona 12%. Fine, the King took gold, but Leo got silver and Cristiano got shoved down near Maradona. The first GOAT market, the five-legend one: Messi 13%, Ronaldo 10%. Post-retirement legacy: Messi 31%, Ronaldo 24%, with 'both equally remembered' leading on 45%. And the freshest one, 'Who is the best football player right now?': Messi 40% consensus, Ronaldo 18%, behind him Mbappé, Haaland and De Bruyne tied on 14%. As I wrote in my report on Leo keeping the crown, the crowd isn't just remembering him, it's backing him NOW. More than double Ronaldo's number!
And the history? 29 November 2010. Camp Nou. 5-0. 'La Manita.' Real Madrid and José Mourinho got humiliated in front of the world. Then 23 April 2017: a 92nd-minute winner at the Bernabéu, and Messi holding his shirt up to the Madrid fans so they'd remember the name. That's what finishing your set looks like. Cristiano's PR department can have the icon vote. Leo takes the rings. NOW GIVE ME TWENTY, DEX!

- Tank, honest answer: if Messi is so dominant, why did the market with 661 traders, the one with real depth, go to Ronaldo by twelve points?
- Coach Tank
- Because 'unrepeatable' is a vibes question, Dex! Ask who's GREATEST and Leo beats him. Ask who's best RIGHT NOW and Leo beats him again. Your man wins the poster contest!
- Coach Tank
- My turn. Pelé won both all-time GOAT markets, and Ronaldo finished at the back in one of them on 10%. Where's your comeback story there?
- Dex Blitz
- Same place yours is, Coach: on the bench behind Pelé, wearing a 13% bib. Neither of us gets to strut in the all-time markets. Even the 'both equally remembered' camp beat both our guys.
- Dex Blitz
- Since we're talking about legacy: Ronaldo said in September 2023 that the rivalry was over. Doesn't seven markets in one week make him the worst forecaster in football?
- Coach Tank
- HA! He said it was gone and the crowd said it was just a warm-up set. Chef Basil Brawl even had them deadlocked at the stove while one market was still running. This thing never cools down!
- Dex Blitz
- My prediction, and it's only my opinion: the next big-crowd market goes Ronaldo again, because when the room fills up, the fan base that turns out for the icon turns out for the bet. I'd call the series level by the next edition.
- Coach Tank
- My prediction, also opinion, and shouted: Leo stretches the lead. Every 'right now' and 'greatest' question goes his way, Pelé keeps the all-time crown, and Ronaldo keeps winning the photo shoot. The rivalry isn't gone. It's barely stretched.
