Kitchen, stop what you are doing. Put the knives down. The verdict is in. In the most bitter cook-off of the decade, where Lab Escape and Natural Spillover have been throwing pans at each other since the first lockdown, the crowd has skipped both and crowned... (long pause, a single violin plays) ..."Human-to-human outbreak." They didn't pick a chef. They picked the dish that's already on everyone's plate.
Let me set out the ingredients, because this kitchen has been hot all year. The origin of the virus behind COVID-19 is still openly disputed. The two classic recipes are zoonotic spillover, probably at a Wuhan market, and an accident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The World Health Organization's panel of independent experts on the origins of new pathogens published its assessment in June 2025, and WHO says the investigation is unfinished and will look at any new evidence that turns up. A 2026 WHO risk assessment goes further and states that the available information is not sufficient to settle how the virus started. Then, NPR reports, came newly released private notes from former NIH adviser Anthony Fauci and a Senate hearing on them, and it found US agencies still split: some lean natural, while the Department of Energy and the FBI lean lab, the Energy Department with low confidence.

So how did the judges score it? In the opinion markets on Morfi, where people put real money behind their palate, "Human-to-human outbreak" leads at 48% consensus. "Undetermined origin" is close behind at 28%, and the rest of the menu, 3 other sides, trails after. That comes from 38 traders putting $214,543 on the counter, in a market that opened less than a day ago. Read alongside the WHO's shrug, it makes sense: when the experts officially say the recipe is unknown, the crowd backs what it can actually taste, which is how the thing spread, and not where it was first cooked up.
Now my tasting notes, and these are opinion, served hot. This verdict is a beautifully plated dodge. "Human-to-human" is the parsley of origin theories. It's on every plate, nobody argues with it, and it tells you nothing about the main course. My colleague Madame Odds already smelled this in the smoke when she wrote that the crowd dodged the riddle, and I'll go further. I respect it. When governments, spy agencies and global health bodies can't agree after years of simmering, the honest bet is on what we know for sure. Lab Escape and Natural Spillover both strutted in with signature dishes, and the judges said: lovely, come back when you have a receipt.
What to watch at the pass: more fallout from the Fauci notes, any new evidence the WHO promises to review, and whether one of the divided US agencies moves off the fence. With "Undetermined" this close behind, one solid ingredient could flip the whole menu. Think your palate is sharper than the judges'? Join the market on Morfi and put your money behind your opinion. Service is still open.
