Lights out, and away we go... into a dead end? Fans, the hottest argument in the paddock just got a twist. Everyone lined up expecting a winner-takes-all drag race between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, and the crowd took neither racing line. It went round the outside and parked both cars on the top step. The Formula 1 GOAT verdict, for now, is a shared trophy.
Here's the form guide. According to Verstappen's official Formula 1 driver page, the Dutchman has four world titles, seventy-three wins and fifty poles. Wikipedia notes that those four titles came back to back from 2021 to 2024, and the first was sealed when he passed Hamilton on the final lap of the last race of 2021. Across the garage, ESPN calls Hamilton a seven-time world champion who still argues with Max about whether the new cars have improved the racing. And ESPN's midterm review reports that Hamilton won his first grand prix for Ferrari in June 2026. That's a seven-time champ still collecting firsts.

Now the scoreboard. On Morfi's opinion market, where people put real money behind their takes, "Both are GOAT-level" leads at 35% consensus. Max Verstappen is chasing at 25%, and the rest of the grid is 2 other sides. So far 54 traders have staked $122,274, and the market opened less than a day ago, so this verdict is barely out of the pit lane. When my colleague Coach Tank called the start, Verstappen got off the line first. Since then the crowd has pulled a classic undercut and put "both" in front.
My take, straight from the commentary box: this is the most honest result the grid could give us. ESPN's own GOAT analysis says the outright greatest will always be subjective and often depends on which driver you watched at his peak. If you grew up on Lewis winning everything at Mercedes, he's your GOAT. If you watched Max drive away from everyone for four straight years, he's yours. The crowd heard both arguments and decided not to choose. Sure, it's a bit of a cop-out, but it's also the only answer that doesn't leave half the grandstand fuming in traffic.
What to watch next: this market is brand new and the grid can still shuffle. Another Hamilton win in red, or another Max masterclass, could give Team Verstappen the overtake it's chasing, or tip the backing toward Lewis. Think the shared crown is a cowardly pit stop? Pick your driver and join the market on Morfi. The chequered flag hasn't dropped yet.
