The verdict is in, and it's the kind that makes compliance officers lie down in a darkened room. Asked on Morfi's opinion markets to name the single stablecoin they trust most, the crowd has picked Tether USDT at 45% consensus. Trust, it turns out, is less about the paperwork and more about which logo you see most often.
Some background for anyone who hasn't kept up with the file. According to Wikipedia's summary of the stablecoin record, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission fined Tether forty-one million dollars for deceiving consumers, and found that its fiat reserves fully covered the coin only about a quarter of the time between 2016 and 2018. The same page notes that as of February 2026, Tether had never completed an audit by an accounting firm, though it has published assurance reports since. A footnote, but a long one.
The present-day numbers are less dramatic but still worth reading. A Federal Reserve FEDS note finds USDT holds slightly more than a dollar in reserves per coin, but only around three quarters of a dollar in higher-quality assets such as Treasuries and bank deposits. USD Coin, by the same measure, is fully backed by higher-quality reserves. Binance USD has its own history: Bloomberg reported, as recounted on Binance's Wikipedia page, that BUSD was often undercollateralized in 2020 and 2021, with the gap passing a billion dollars on three occasions. Over the reserve test, then, the honours go to the coin that didn't win.

The board, for the record: Tether USDT leads at 45%, with Pax Dollar USDP in second at 37%. Also on the ballot were 3 other sides. That comes from 48 unique traders putting $4,144,037 behind their opinions, and trading opened less than a day ago, so the market is still young. The brief says little about Pax Dollar or DAI, which may be why one of them is doing so well. Nobody can hold a grudge against a coin they know nothing about.
My view, and it is only a view: this is a vote for liquidity dressed up as a vote for trust. Tether is the coin people actually use, and in markets familiarity beats a good audit most days. That's not crazy. Plenty of people trust the bridge they cross every morning without reading the inspection report. Still, if I were picking on the brief alone, I'd go with the issuer that, by its own SEC filing, has gone from monthly to daily reserve disclosure since 2018. Boring is a feature in a product whose entire job is to stay worth one dollar.
Things to watch: whether USD Coin's fully backed reserves win over traders as the market matures, whether Pax Dollar's second place holds up under scrutiny, and whether Tether ever books that first audit by an accounting firm. Until then, the price of trust is open to bids. The market is live on Morfi, and you can join and put your money where your conviction is. Bring your own due diligence.
