Stop the presses, take the red pill and pour yourself something sparkling, darlings, because the crowd has picked the best Keanu Reeves movie and it isn't the one the critics wanted. Out of a filmography stuffed with leather coats, bullet time, runaway buses and one most excellent phone booth, the opinion markets on Morfi have crowned The Matrix. And between you and me, the losers are not taking it gracefully.

The fight was always going to get messy, because Keanu Reeves is a Canadian actor who has made classics in science fiction, action and comedy. Each of the big contenders has serious credentials. The Guardian named John Wick his best film in 2024, and IGN and Syfy also put it near the top of his filmography. The Matrix has something even fancier: in 2012 the Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry, calling it culturally, historically and aesthetically significant. Then there's Speed, the 1994 bus thriller with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and a critics' consensus praising Reeves, Dennis Hopper and Sandra Bullock. It also made roughly ten times its budget at the worldwide box office.

My take, and it is purely mine, sweethearts: the crowd got it right, and anyone who says otherwise is still stuck in the simulation. John Wick is a wonderful revenge fantasy, but The Matrix changed how a whole generation dressed, argued and watched action scenes. Speed taking second is the quiet scandal I'm loving. It's the friend who turns up to the party in a plain tee and still steals the night. John Wick fans, I see you sharpening your pencils. Don't shoot the messenger.

What comes next? Wick fans have a comeback planned, with a fifth John Wick film reported to be in development at Lionsgate and Chad Stahelski returning to direct.
