WHISTLE! Gather round, people! The crowd has picked its best current Test captain, and it's Joe Root on top of the podium. Not the loudest guy in the room. Not the flashiest. The grinder. The guy who does the reps. Ben Stokes? You're second, champ. Get back on the bench and do another set.
But hold your water bottles, because this ballot comes with a fitness test of its own. The research brief flags it straight away: not all of the names on the list are current Test captains, so the premise needs checking. The England cricket team page on Wikipedia lists Root as England's Test captain. Pakistan's armband has been passed around like a medicine ball. The Pakistan national cricket team page lists Babar Azam, and the captains list says he got the job in 2026 ahead of the West Indies and England series. Yet a page on Pakistan's 2026 tour of England says Salman Ali Agha led them in the first Test, his first time in charge in the format. Over in India, Wikipedia records that Shubman Gill took over the Test captaincy in May 2025, after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket.
Got all that? Good. Because the crowd shrugged off the paperwork and voted on vibes, leadership and grit. On Morfi's opinion markets Root sits at 58% consensus, with Ben Stokes chasing at 22%. Also on the ballot: 4 other sides. That's 28 traders putting $14,037 behind their calls, and the market opened less than a day ago. That's a fast start, people!

My take, and it IS my take: this is the crowd rewarding the long-distance runner over the sprinter. Stokes captains like he's going for a one-rep max on every ball, and I love it! But the crowd likes Root's kind of strength: steady, patient, keep stacking the plates. Stokes, this is tough love. Second place isn't a crisis. It's a training block. Come back stronger!
What to watch next: whether the captaincy question gets settled, and whether Pakistan's rotating armband finally lands with one player. A day in, these numbers are only warming up. Think the crowd's wrong? Don't just sit there yelling at the scoreboard. Go join the market on Morfi, put your money where your mouth is, and show us what you've got!
