Chefs, step back from your stations. Tonight's mystery box holds a whole decade, and the brief is brutal: name the music genre that best captured and shaped global culture in the 2010s. Not the one you hummed in the shower. The one that seasoned everything else. The ovens are barely warm, and already the kitchen is split down the middle.

Let's read the ingredient labels before we taste. Forbes reported in July 2017 that hip-hop and R&B had overtaken rock as the most consumed genre in U.S. history, according to the Wikipedia summary of 2010s music. Spotify crowned Drake its most-streamed artist of the decade, with more than twenty-eight billion streams, ahead of Ed Sheeran, Post Malone and Ariana Grande, CBC News reported. Rolling Stone writers even counted trap, a hip-hop subgenre, among the biggest influences on 2010s pop, with Katy Perry and Lady Gaga borrowing its beats.

The rivals did bring real produce to the pass, though. EDM hit mass commercial success mid-decade but lost its grip on mainstream pop by the end, according to the encyclopedic record of the 2010s. And Gangnam Style topped the charts in more than thirty countries in 2012 and reached number two in the United States. That proved a viral K-pop-adjacent hit could become serious money, long before BTS filled stadiums.

So what does the tasting panel say? On Morfi's opinion markets, where people put money behind their palates, Hip-Hop leads at 21% consensus with 12 holders. Pop trails at 20% with 12 holders. Also on the ballot: 3 other sides. That's 15 traders and $60,090 on the line in a market that opened less than a day ago. The crowd's conviction lines up neatly with the streaming receipts. Still, Pop is close enough to feel the heat from the next burner.

Now my verdict, and it is pure opinion with the apron on. Hip-Hop isn't one dish on this menu. It's the stock pot everything else was cooked in. When pop's biggest stars reach for trap hi-hats, the sauce has already won. Pop is a beautiful plate, glossy and perfectly portioned, but in this decade it borrowed its seasoning from somebody else's kitchen. EDM was a spectacular flambé that burned out before dessert. K-pop? The most exciting import of the decade, though I'd argue its full banquet was served in the 2020s. Hip-Hop, you are the chef of the decade. Pop, don't take off your whites just yet.

What to watch next: whether the pop loyalists rally before the sauce sets, and whether K-pop's fan armies show up to flip the pass. Fresh markets swing hard in their first hours, so this lead is far from plated. Think your genre ran the decade? Grab a knife, join the market on Morfi, and back your palate with real money.
