Gather close and mind the candle. I asked the orb the biggest question in politics, which country is the best in the world, and it went very cold and smelled faintly of fondue. The crowd's verdict is in: Switzerland wears the crown. Trading opened less than a day ago, and I can already hear the Dutch sharpening their bicycle bells.
Now let me clear the incense, because the spirits here can't agree. No single ranking settles the question. According to Euronews, the World Happiness Report 2026 put Finland first for the ninth year running, followed by Iceland, Denmark and Costa Rica. The Netherlands came seventh and Switzerland tenth, and no English-speaking country made the top ten. New Zealand was the best of them, in eleventh.
Other oracles tell it differently. On the UN's Human Development Index, using 2023 data, Switzerland ranked second and Denmark fourth. And Euronews reports that Switzerland came out on top of Remitly's 2026 ranking of the best countries to move to, up from second the year before. So the happiness priests crown the Nordics, while the people who measure wealth, health and where you'd move your suitcase keep pointing at the Alps.
- Switzerland30%
- Netherlands19%
- Denmark18%
- Canada16%
- New Zealand16%
The crowd sided with the suitcase. In the opinion markets on Morfi, Switzerland leads at 30% consensus, with the Netherlands next at 19%. Also on the ballot: 3 other sides. So far 31 traders have staked $94,827 on their convictions. The interesting part is who's missing from the podium. Finland tops the world for happiness, yet it doesn't lead this market, which suggests the crowd is grading prosperity and order more than joy. It's a turnaround, too, from the stalemate my colleague Chef Basil Brawl served up in his Denmark-versus-Switzerland cook-off, where the two were locked in a dead heat.
Now my own reading, and remember it's prophecy, not fact. I think the crowd has picked the country you'd trust to hold your money, not the one that'll make you smile. Switzerland is the Tower card turned upright: solid, expensive and very punctual. The Netherlands is the Star, flatter and friendlier, and to my eye more fun at a party. A crown built on spreadsheets can slip, because markets this young are fickle, and I'd quietly put a candle out for the Dutch.
What to watch next: whether the Netherlands closes the gap as more traders arrive, and whether happiness fans finally show up for the Nordics and pull the vote toward joy. The cards are still being shuffled. Pick your country, back your conviction and join the market on Morfi before the orb goes dark again.
