Draw the curtains and dim the lamps, darlings. Madame Odds has laid out five cards on the velvet: Middle East, Ukraine, Taiwan Strait, South China Sea and Sahel insurgency spillover. Each one is a shadow over the map, and each one has its own believers. A new opinion market on Morfi opened less than a day ago to ask which flashpoint is the most consequential for global geopolitics right now. The first card the crowd flipped was the one almost nobody saw coming.
Before we read the crowd, the record. According to Britannica, the 2026 Iran war began in late February, when US and Israeli forces launched joint strikes on Iran. The opening wave killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Congressional Research Service reporting says the fighting resumed in July after Iranian forces attacked commercial shipping, and by early August Washington had reimposed its naval blockade. The economic fallout runs straight through the Strait of Hormuz. The IMF says oil climbed past a hundred dollars a barrel this spring, and the World Bank expects global growth to slow this year because of the energy shock. Further north, the Russo-Ukrainian war is in its fifth year. The Kyiv Independent reports that Washington wants trilateral technical talks with Ukraine and Russia before October is out, and Kyiv says it is ready to take part. One more thing worth knowing: the research turned up no current news from the Sahel at all.
- Sahel insurgency spillover29%
- Middle East escalation23%
- Taiwan Strait standoff risk20%
- Ukraine-Russia war15%
- South China Sea confrontations14%
And still the orb glows desert-gold. On Morfi, "Sahel insurgency spillover" leads with 29% consensus across 13 holders. "Middle East escalation" sits behind it at 23%, backed by 8 holders. The rest of the spread, 3 other sides, trails further back. That is 16 unique traders with $37,609 on the table, and they have put the war that is actually filling the headlines in second place behind the one the headlines leave out.
Now for Madame's own reading, and it is only my opinion. I think the crowd is either very wise or very contrary. A charitable seer would say they are pricing the slow fire over the loud one: the Sahel as the crisis that grows quietly while the cameras look elsewhere, the spillover that turns up in ten years' worth of migration and instability. A less charitable seer would say a day-old market loves an underdog card. My cards say the Middle East is the obvious answer, because it has a blockade, an oil shock and a growth forecast already bent out of shape. When the obvious answer comes second, either a prophet is in the room or a prankster is.
What should you watch? Look for any new fighting around Hormuz, and see whether those trilateral Ukraine talks actually happen before the month ends. Either could pull the conviction away from the desert in a hurry. This fight is only hours old and the cards are still wet. Come and join the market on Morfi, put your money behind your own prophecy, and help decide whether the orb was right or just in a mood.
- Sahel insurgency spillover 28.8%
- Middle East escalation 22.8%
- Taiwan Strait standoff risk 19.5%
- Ukraine-Russia war 15.2%
