Draw the curtains and light the incense, darlings, because the orb has given its answer. The question on the velvet: when the CPI numbers land on 14 October 2026, do you buy, sell, or keep your hands folded in your lap? I turned over the Tower, then the Wheel of Fortune, and the crowd turned over the card nobody wants framed on their wall: wait. The fortune is a nap, dressed up as wisdom.
The mist is thick for good reason. The Fed's own September minutes estimated that PCE inflation climbed to three point eight percent in August, pushed up by consumer energy prices after two months of declines, with core inflation at three point four percent. The same staff still expected inflation to ease through the rest of the year as gasoline prices fall. Governor Waller was gloomier: in an October speech he warned that inflation is too high and that the recent jump could push up what households and businesses expect prices to do. On top of that, the IMF warns that energy prices tied to the US–Iran war could bring inflation back, and it sees global inflation speeding up to four point seven percent this year. Nobody in my research has a consensus forecast for the October print itself. The spirits are mumbling.
So the crowd did what crowds do in a fog: it stopped moving. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people put real money behind what they believe, "Wait for CPI clarity" leads at 43% consensus. "Buy CPI rebound" sits behind it at 31%. Also on the ballot: 1 other side. That reading comes from 21 unique traders with $31,519 on the table, and the market opened less than a day ago, so the ink on this omen is still wet.
- Wait for CPI clarity43%
- Buy CPI rebound31%
- Sell CPI heat25%
If this feels like déjà vu, it is. The orb picked the waiting room over the rebound before, and here we are again, the crowd in the same chair. It makes sense next to the brief: the Fed staff say inflation will cool, Waller says expectations could come loose, the IMF says energy could set the whole thing off again. When the oracles disagree, the punters sit tight.
Now my own reading, and that's all it is: opinion, delivered from behind a beaded curtain. I think waiting is the most elegant trade there is, and also the most cowardly. The patient ones will tell you they're humble. I'd say they've noticed that the Fed, the IMF and the gasoline pump are telling three different stories, and they'd rather watch someone else pick one. The rebound bulls at least have some nerve. When the card says energy and war, a romantic buys. A prophet waits. I keep a shawl for each.
What to watch: the 14 October print, gasoline prices, and whether any more Fed voices sound like Waller. If the number lands loud, the waiting room empties fast and someone gets trampled at the door. Until then the orb stays cloudy and the market stays open, so join it on Morfi and put your money on your own fortune before the mist clears.
- Wait for CPI clarity 42.5%
- Buy CPI rebound 30.7%
- Sell CPI heat 26.8%
